Whatever happened to combo problems
The recent announcement from Warner of The Brave One on combo without the price hike has made me think.
I can't remember the last time a combo appeared and caused a problem.
It used to be that every other combo that came out would freeze up and cause error codes. Looking back over recent posts here and at AVS this doesn't appear to have been an issue for quite some time.
Looks like the problem is fixed.

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
I've never had a combi - or any other disc - lock up or freeze. Admittedly though I don't tend to watch discs the second they are released and I keep my player's firmware upto date.

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
Even without the price hike - I dont particularly like combo's
If they could clearly label one side ( ie inner plasic ring is red on one side and blue - or black and white so people dont think blue=bluray lol) then I wouldnt mind so much, just peering at the tiny writing on one side on the inner circle is a real pita ( i dont have great eyes for such tiny text)
or couldnt they "burn" the SD onto the label side of a combi - then every issue of mine would be iradicated

I'm surprised they don't do this. I had a few (US purchased) CD/DVD combis that had big 'CD this side up' and 'DVD this side up' labels on the centre plastic.

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
I thought with HD combos the dvd side doesn't have any writing on it at all, unless I am mistaken

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
I'm at work at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it says "HD DVD this side" and "DVD this side", at least on some of my combos.

Universal combis have writing on the HD DVD side and none on the DVD side - the HD DVD side has a red ring stating "This side up HD DVD" and black ring stating "Other side up DVD". Warner ones just have a white strip on the HD DVD side saying the same.
I think what the poster above was saying though - and with what I agree - is that the whole plastic ring should be coloured in with DVD or HD DVD in big letters so it's immediately obvious which is which.

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
I've got a few, and don't see a problem with them.

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
The read issues were fixed in drive firmware (as opposed to player firmware)

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
Not keen on them as they are usually have a R1 B-side which limits what I could play it back on. Never had a problem with one though.

Re: Whatever happened to combo problems
I've had one problem with one combo.
The Matrix froze on me. I clicked back 1 chapter and it repeated the bit I'd just seen and continued past the place where it previously froze, and on to the end, with no further problems.
Having said that, I had the same problem (and solved it with the same solution) with my UK copy of Children of Men, which isn't a combo.
In both instances the 'freeze' came at about the point I'd expect a layer change.
BTW, Region 1 isn't a problem for me, as all my house's SD DVD players are Region Free.
