Can anyone tell me how come I can't find either a blu-ray or HD-DVD of Lawrence of Arabia for sale.I assumed that once it was shown on SKY HD that it must exist .Am I wrong?

I think it's coming, don't know when though, on Blu Ray (no idea about HD DVD) as it came up on a list of "coming soon" stuff on a Blu Ray disc I was watching yesterday.

Space 1999 and Jesus of Nazareth was shown on ITV HD before it shut down. Sky HD has shown the Star Wars films in the past. Anything recorded on film can be reshown in HD for TV.

It is a Fox film, so maybe in the next few months or maybe never given the unreliability of their release schedule.

BD+ has been cracked and this appears to be having an effect on their schedule.

Thanks for all the replies.I'm toying with the notion of getting a HD player after Christmas.I thought (in my innocence) that once a film was shown on tv , it was commercially available.I didn't realise that a tv station could broadcast a film independently of whether or not it was realised to the public on disc(never gave it much thought really)
Once classics like Lawrence O.A. etc. are realised on some form of HD disc then I will probably take the plunge although my appetite is being whetted by the likes of Blade Runner etc.

If it was shown on Sky HD then they've definitely created a high def master. Further than that you can't really say.

There must be dozens, if not hundreds of films that've been shown on Sky HD which have no HMD release or announcement. So I'm afraid it can't be used as a guide, unfortunately.

Lawrence Of Arabia is a Colombia Tristar/Sony title, isn't it? I'm sure there's a clip of it on the Sony Blu-Ray trailer that precedes Casino Royale!

Anyway, I think Paidgeek (Insider at AVS) indicated it would be released sometime in 2008...so fingers crossed.

Correctomundo!

Sony/Columbia-TriStar.

I too have heard whispers of an '08 release.

Here's hoping. Other than Warner, no Blu-ray Studio has released any true classic film yet (astonishing, but true).

There are lots of good films on HDM, and some very good ones. There are e some new(ish) films which may go down as classics. But how many absolute, bona fide, unarguable classics are there?

On HD DVD only:

The Adventures of Robin Hood
Spartacus
Casablanca
Mutiny on the Bounty
The Deer Hunter
The Sting
The Untouchables

Blu-ray only:

Halloween

Both Formats:

Goodfellas
The Searchers
Dog Day Afternoon
Deliverance
The Wild Bunch
2001: A Space Odyssey

Before anyone starts - I'm not saying this to cause any arguments. I think anyone, no matter how they looked at it, would have to agree that Sony, Fox & Disney have been utterly pants at releasing classics from their vaults.

Even if we look at modern possible classics, many are Warner dual-format releases or HD DVD-only. The only ones I could find that were BD-only were OldBoy and Crash.

Roll on Lawrence of Arabia!

Yep. Looks like it's Columbia throghout the world as far as distribution rights go.

Damm, A classic this one.

Probably 2009 before it'll appear on HD DVD then
