Can anyone recommend me a few awesome films for Blu-ray that *aren't* on HD-DVD?

Hi guys,

I got my PS3 on Tuesday and will be getting a Toshiba HD-EP35 HD-DVD player in a couple of weeks (hopefully). Due to the way my setup will be arranged / limited, I'll only get true HD audio from the EP-35. That and region freeness basically means that if I can buy films on the HD-DVD format, I will.

So, in the mean time I'd really like to get a few films that are only available on Blu-ray and are decent. Any suggestions? Anything that will show BD off?

Casino Royale, Final Fantasy, The Spider-man trilogy, Sunshine (awesome), Fantastic Four 2 (proper demo stuff) and the Pirates films (cack films, mint PQ).

Oh, Halloween is cracking as well. Amazing PQ for such an old film.

What region is your PS3 going to be? (US - Region A, UK - Region B)

Kingdom Of Heaven, Black Hawk Down and Starship Troopers would get my vote - with exception of the latter (which is UK region free) I think the others are available in both the UK and US.

Black Hawk Down is a great disc and a mint film but I'm not sure it shows off BD to it's full potential due to the deliberate grain inherent in the film. Amazing sound quality though. I remember watching 300 on BD and expecting a 3D quality image but the director opted for a grittier image. Still, it looked the way the director intended. I willl laugh if Miramax decide to release the woeful Grindhouse on either HD format though. Pointless.

Kung Fu Hustle. It's impossible to judge the picture quality when you're crying with laughter.

All the best

Re: Can anyone recommend me a few awesome films for Blu-ray that *aren't* on HD-DVD?

Its a UK PS3 so that limits my imports. Thanks guys for all the suggestions, definite food for thought. I'm thinking Fantastic Four 2 maybe as a buy in store (want something to watch on Saturday night) and maybe Sunshine, Final Fantasy and Pirates via Movietyme (any idea how long they normally take to deliver from ordering btw?).

I thought Pirates 2 was fun but never got round to seeing 3. Might as well I guess. I already own Final Fantasy but I reckon that film'd look great in HD and it was pretty cheap last time I checked. Sunshine was a bit of a let down film wise but I went to see it due to the cool massive renderings of the Sun in high definition (pure geek here) and seeing that in 1080p at home would be worth it!!

I'm not into war films or splatter films at all so that rules out some of the more popular big budget HD films such as Black Hawk Down. I also refuse to buy the new not-so-Bond Casino Royale. Great film. Pants Bond film.

Cheers for the suggestions everyone!

Fantastic Four 2 was very good. Far better than the first one and much better than I expected . Kung Fu Hustle is far better though.

I'd definitely say the Pirates films, particularly Dead Man's Chest which is a stunning demo disc. Apocalypto & Cars are sublime efforts from Disney, also. I'm currently using Sunshine as my demo disc (great film too)...then, as others have pointed out, you have Casino Royale, Die Hard 4.0, Spider-Man 3, Halloween, The Fifth Element etc etc.

As posted elsewhere:

On Blu-ray Disc:

Big Fish
Casino Royale
Speed
Kingdom of Heaven
Identity
A Few Good Men
The Terminator

I'd also agree that Halloween is very good PQ indeed - not just for an old film, either. It's pretty reasonable by today's standards.

I can't agree with Spanky that Casino Royale is a 'pants Bond film'. Okay, maybe it is if you're used to the high camp of Roger Moore, but it's quite easilt the closest in tone to the real Bond of the books.

Good titles to own, only on Blu-Ray:

Stranger than Fiction, Casino Royale, The Fifth Element (remastered), Legends of Jazz, Apocalypto.

B.t.w., for picture quality there are these topics:

The Tier System for Blu-ray PQ

and

The Tier System for HD DVD PQ

(these were formerly on the avsforum)

Not sure if I'm allowed to post this, but as the HD section of this particular forum is no longer active, perhaps there's no harm?

Anyway, this is/was AVS's 'Tier System' for rating Blu-Ray discs in order of picture quality based on the consensus of the members there. Of course, opinions are always going to vary, but used as a guideline, it can be quite useful.
