The Invasion - Blu-Ray/HD-DVD

Coming courtesy of Warner Brothers on January 8th.

Despite the critical panning and terrible word-of-mouth, I'm still tempted to give this a go...if only to see how bad it is for myself. I'm a huge fan of Kaufman's 1978 version (Can we have that released on Blu-Ray please MGM?) and I always find Craig watchable...so perhaps there's something in this to enjoy?

I don't know what went wrong with this movie, I mean Nicole Kidman can be a convincing and talented actress (loved The Others even if it was all a little Tales Of The Unexpected) and Daniel Craig has pretty much universal appeal but this truly sucked.

Err, I wouldn't bother if I were you. Watch the Donald Sutherland version instead. Creepy as hell. This version however, sucks.

It's so awful it's not even worth renting. It has NO positives whatsoever. Shame.

Re: The Invasion - Blu-Ray/HD-DVD

I decided to go for this after all and I quite enjoyed it, particularly the first half of the film which really captured the atmosphere of the '56 & '78 versions imo. Sadly, I thought it really lost it's way in the final third and the ending was incredibly naff.

I 'd really like to see Oliver Hirschbiegel's original cut that was rejected by Warner (They hired the Wachowski's and V For Vendetta director James McTeigue to re-shoot a large chunk of the flick)...maybe they'll do something similar to what Paramount did with Payback: Straight Up and let the director release his version of the film one day?

Anyway, yes the film itself not quite as bad as the reviews suggest (again imo) but perhaps nowhere near as good as it should have been...and certainly not up to the standard of Kaufman's 1978 masterpiece.

As for the disc - it's a lttle light on supplements but Warner really delivers in the video & audio departments.

Film 3/5
Audio 4/5
Video 4/5
Extras 2/5

Worth a look.

Loathed this with a passion when I watched it. Any one of the previous versions trounces it easily.

Re: The Invasion - Blu-Ray/HD-DVD

I accidentally ordered this over Xmas whilst drunk
I saw it days later and thought it was utter trash, so much so that it's second on my list of utter trash movies just under Hellraiser 2. The film was so dull it defies belief and Nicole Kidman's face was loaded with so much plastic and fakeness that it was somewhat sad. Watch the original, or the remake with Gabrielle Anwar - they're a million miles more watchable and actualy SCARY.

It arrived today on HD-DVD! So I need to return the bugger to Movietyme's UK returns address.
