Close Encounters on Blu-Ray

Looks like Spielberg is finally putting a film, Close Encounters, out on HD (Nov 13th):

http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/2...544490600.html

I wonder if he is going to support Blu-ray only or let his films be released on both formats.

Re: Close Encounters on Blu-Ray

I haven't bought into either HD format yet, but I wonder if this will be a big deal in terms of the format war????

Also, I read on TheDigitalBits that the Star Wars producer stated that if there is no winner of the HD format war soon, they may skip HD disk altogether and release Star Wars on HD download!

LINK

Quote:
While we're talking Fox, you may recall how we mentioned a few days ago that Lucasfilm producer Rick McCallum told audiences at the Star Wars Celebration convention in Europe recently that the Star Wars films wouldn't be released in high-definition until one format emerged a winner. Industry sources have informed us that McCallum also added that if the high-def format war isn't resolved soon, the company might skip high-def disc altogether and release the films in HD via download only. Yikes!
For the record, I'm happy with DVD

Re: Close Encounters on Blu-Ray

Fantastic news - although with the Blade Runner Set, 5 Kubrick Flicks, Spider-Man Trilogy and Fox's supposed 'assault' in the fourth quarter, it's going to be a rather expensive couple of months leading up to Crimbo!

Re: Close Encounters on Blu-Ray

"The release marks the first time a Spielberg movie has been issued on high-definition disc, and it also is the first home video release of all three versions of the film: the 1977 original theatrical cut, the re-edited 1980 theatrical special edition and Spielberg's director's cut, released in 1998"

Three versions!!!! Cant wait..

I'm sure Spielberg /Lucas will check the numbers on Transformers when it comes out on HD-DVD end of the year.

Close Encounters is owned by Sony/Columbia Pictures that is why it's only on Blu-ray

Re: Close Encounters on Blu-Ray

If it's owned by SONY/ Columbia Pictures than that kind of explains why it's the only spielberg film being released at the moment

Re: Close Encounters on Blu-Ray

I never expected to like this film, and didn't watch it at the cinema or TV, then my Mrs bought the SE on DVD about 5 years ago - and now I think its a brilliant film, great story, special effects and sound effects. Its good for repeat viewings too.

However not buying any thing on BR/HD yet (except maybe Bladerunner).
