Rent HD Films from Blockbusters But.. only in Blur-ray
i went into my local store and they were just putting up a blu-ray display so i asked about HD-dvd and he said we're not doing that blockbusters are going with the blu-ray format my initial thought was oh no.
But thinking would this not be a monopoly as HD-dvd is not offered even though avalible!!
Thanks.

Wrong use of the word 'monopoly'
I guess technically in most towns blockbusters could be pretty much defined as a monopoly or diopoly, since they have pretty much closed down all their competitors through choice and quantity.
Either way there is nothing wrong with them deciding to only stock one format (this is not a monopoly). In theory this allows another player to open stores only stocking hd-dvd but ultimelty its just too much a specalist market.

Or cancel your subscription to Blockbusters and use a company that stocks HD DVD. I use Lovefilm.

I don't think it's legal to sell or rent any film unless it's been certified by the BBFC, so renting US imports is a no no.
I'd second using Lovefilm, been with them 3 years now and I've been getting quite a few HD-DVDs off them just lately.

The only problem i have found with love film is there a limited ammount of hd films (both Blu ray and HD-DVD ) that i hadn't bought or seen already.
Blu ray has a better representation imho Quote:

| I know what you mean but you sentence doesn't make sence.
I think what you mean it has to have a BBFC certificate!

Its also illegal to sell (including rent) non EU items including US hddvd, bluray, dvd's. Which is a real shame.

i think you are allowed to sell imports just as long as they have passed through customs and have a BBFC sticker on them.

I was tempted to go with Blockbusters online for my SD-DVDs and then just use the trade forum to see all my Blu-Rays and HD-DVDs. Or are lovefilm pretty good?
What would you guys recommend?
Cheers
Craig

| After a slow start I'm now getting a steady stream of HD-DVDs (I'd say at least every other disc I'm sent is HD-DVD at the moment) Blu-Ray seems much slower, only had one so far.

Hmm my experience with lovefilm is different. I've got a mix of dvd and hd dvd. i've put down all hd dvds available almost and so far they've not sent any.. however, it looks like they are meeting me halfway because they've just sent out to me rocky balboa and dejavu sd dvds, the first has only recently released on dvd. I'd expected a 4 month wait for these If you've got a decent upscaler the quality can still be damn fine on sd dvd. Night at the Museum and Devil Wears Prada were excellent sd dvd transfers for example when upscaled to 1080i
