Re: hd dvd films - recommendations required

Harry Potter and Batman Begins have already been mentioned. Chronicles of Riddick is also an amazing transfer.

Some older movies that are spectacular on HD DVD are The Adventure of Robin Hood, Casablanca, Grand Prix and The Searchers. Warner Bros worked miracles with their releases of these films.

Also if you're not yet aware of this, there's a PQ Tier thread over on AVS, which looks purely at the WOW factor of movies released on HD DVD (and BD):

King Kong has great PQ but I found the film dull, the best HD DVD I have for PQ in the Nine Inch Nails music one

Corpse Bride is stunning. Shows off the black and gray scale available on a decent plasma as well as colour (later part of film) with excellent sound and no artifiacts on the transfer.

The best picture I have ever seen on a plasma (or any screen for that matter) was on a fujitsu 58 series running from a toshib hd-e1. Amazing!

Re: hd dvd films - recommendations required

Welcome tony.

I would definitely recommend
Children of Men
Happy Feet (for PQ especially)
The Departed
Casablanca (if you love the film this transfer is awesome)
Also, The Fast and the Furious trilogy are amazing discs (if you like the films)
Fearless is also a very good disc indeed.
Equilibrium is also excellent, although can be a bit pricey (if you can find it in stock - Japanese release)

Re: hd dvd films - recommendations required

I wish both Hd-DVD and blu-ray would come out with more exciting titles

The few really good films have been out ages, the rest are just "average"

Im not saying that an average film doesnt deserve a good transfer - but the studios are releasing veryyyyyy slowly (considering the back catalogue available)

Re: hd dvd films - recommendations required

King Kong and Happy Feet for PQ.

I'd steer clear of Superman Returns. PQ is good but not really ideal as a demo disk apart from the 747/Shuttle sequence.

Re: hd dvd films - recommendations required

Hi Tony,

I'd recommend:

- Mission Impossible 3 (really sharp & detailed transfer and I like the film!)
- King Kong (great pic)
- Happy Feet (amazing pic and sound)
- Batman Begins (great film and good pic and great sound)
- The Bourne Supremacy (great pic and good flick)
- either of the Riddick movies (although Pitch Black is better film, Chronicles has a very good transfer)
- Serenity (nice pic)
- Superman Returns (great sound and good transfer, but doesn't really show-off the image as its soft...but intentionally I believe)

hope this helps!
