BR image quality question

I picked up a PS3 the other day, half of my excitement about getting one was due to BR movies. Ive watched a fair few HD trailers over the past year or so and have been really impressed by the quality so I ordered quite a few movies in advance.

Now Ive watched about 5 BR films, I can see the improvements but something that irk's me is the GRAIN. I have very evident grain on every film Ive ordered, whereas on the HD trailer for The Departed (One of the films I purchased) it was nowhere to be seen. I did expect some grain from some of my other BluRays, Silent Hill and The Descent for example, Id read reviews before I bought them. But this leads me to a couple of questions Id like to throw out there..

Is it possible to eliminate some of the grain from playing with the TV's picture settings? If so, how do you achieve that on your TV?

And second, should a HD trailer not be considered a faithful example of what you should expect when buying that BluRay movie?

If you watch Crank, Ice Age 2 or Open Season and there's grain, there's something wrong at your end.

Many movies will have grain, just as at the cinema, sometimes it's even artificially added, i.e Monster House.

HD trailer downloads will be poorer quality than a Blu-ray/HD-DVD disc, Departed on Blu-ray/HD-DVD is as it should look.

I only have a few BD's, but no grain at all- the picture quality is amazing.

i looked at a br demo in currys today, full 1080p lcd screen with samsung player.batman looked as good as my hd-dvd copy but the rest of the demo looked crap imo.maybe it was the screen or the setup but if that was a example of the much talked about 1080p signal that we are all supost to be wetting our nickers over then im afraid they can keep it !

anyway to my point that i have over 30 HD-DVDs now and some of them look 3d in depth and as clear as crystal and a few of them look like they have been re-recorded on a old nokia mobile phone. batman is proberbly the best iv seen so far (on hd and br) and 12 monkeys looks so bad i wonderd if they had put the wrong film in the case. superman returns looks a bit noisy on backgrounds ie the sky ect. more res dont always mean better picture unfortunatly .

There's an awful lot of ignorance out there regarding grain. As someone else has mentioned, grain is often intentional or associated with the film stock used to shoot the movie. Grainy is how many movies are meant to be...for example, you wouldn't criticise Saving Private Ryan because it's grainy and the colours are washed out would you? Doesn't matter if you had a 4000p display, if it was shot with grain, you'll still have grain....just in higher res

I think there's a Blu-ray demo with Batman Begins footage on it.

I've watched about 20 BD's and quite a few have obvious grain but most of the time that is how the film is supposed to look, your just seeing it clearer than you have before.
HD-DVD is very similar, granted I've noticed it more on Blu-ray but I think that is mainly down to the content itself not the format.
