MPEG-2 vs VC-1
Flags of Our Fathers is being released with "Blu-ray getting MPEG-2, and HD DVD VC-1":

Will be intersting to see which has the better transfer? Or has there already been a movie released using both codecs that already answers this question?

Re: MPEG-2 vs VC-1
Similar dual release with Failure to Lauch:
"Tech specs include 1080p transfers (in MPEG-2 on Blu-ray, and VC-1 on HD DVD), and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks, which typical of Paramount, are unequal, with the Blu-ray getting a 640kbps encode, while the HD DVD gets a more robust 1.5mbps Dolby Digital-Plus version."

Re: MPEG-2 vs VC-1
Its strange that they would create 2 different HD encodings. Surely it would be cheaper for them to do one and put it out on both formats (like Warner seem to do).

Re: MPEG-2 vs VC-1
All the Paramount releases so far have been mpeg2 for Blu Ray and VC-1 or AVC for HD-DVD. Early Warner titles also used mpeg2 for Blu Ray and VC-1 for HD-DVD so the comparison's are already out there.
Popular opinion says that the earlier Warner titles were better using VC-1 and that the Paramount titles are for all intents and purposes identical.
I believe the Paramount titles use different codecs are they have two production houses working on the titles (rumour was that Sony was doing the Blu Ray Paramount encodes). Not sure who does the HD-DVD encodes, but whomever it was decided to use AVC for Babel over VC-1 (after a comparison) - ooer.

Don't recall exact numbers but HD DVD has received greater reviews with VC-1 than the counter part on blu-ray of the same movies.
