Where do you get your HD discs from?

OK, where do you source the majority of your HD discs from? (Doesn't matter which format.)

The UK sales figures seem to be very low, (see here) and in the case of HD-DVD would seem to stuggle to match the presumed no. of HD-DVD drives sold for the Xbox 360. We've got to be buying discs from somewhere right??

Not necessarily after the exact website just how you buy.

Re: Where do you get your HD discs from?

I voted online from US, although I have bought.... 2 I think... from HMV, very early on after getting my player because I couldn't wait

I might get a few more on impluse form the UK, such as from ASDA if the one near me ever stocks any. I do recon it'll still be at least 90% import though.

Re: Where do you get your HD discs from?

I've bought the vast majority of mine from good old MovieTyme, although I too had a weak moment before Christmas and bought a few from HMV at hugely inflated prices (£25!!!)...

I'd buy a few more from MT if they'd send me some more money off vouchers!

Last voucher I got from them was a month ago, but was for £2 so can't complain.

To answer the original question, most of my discs come from DVDPacific, but also order from Axel, MovieTyme, DeepDiscountDVD, Amazon (US, Germany and Japan), DVDWorldUSA and DVDBoxOffice (just got some $5 vouchers from them which makes the Fox Blu Ray discs pretty cheap).

Re: Where do you get your HD discs from?

I buy all my discs online from the US - HD DVDs from Movietyme and BluRays from Amazon.com. I will buy some UK discs - at least for region free HD DVD - but the big stumbling blocks are (for me):

Prices
High Street prices for this discs are absurd for both formats. £24.99 for some gash films is not going to inspire anyone to buy them. You can get them much cheaper online though (Sendit for example where most HD DVDs hover around £14).

Combis?
On the HD DVD side most UK releases seem to be HD DVD only - I am a big fan of the combi discs - but I suppose a few might see this as an advantage as it allows users to choose whichever they prefer.

Sluggish Releases
Early days yet but by the time a title is released in Europe I normally have the US version already.

Different Cases
This shouldn't be an issue - but it is Some UK releases have DVD thickness spines. It looks a little gash when on the shelf. This wouldn't be so bad but (unbelieveably) some studios have just deformed the US coverart to fit the wider shaped case! Checkout the spine on Sony's Ultraviolet BluRay! And they expect us to pay £25 for it!

Regional Coding
Only an issue for some BluRay discs - but a significant one none-the-less. If the new formats fail to become mainstream they will still survive as a niche market. However they are more likely to survive and prosper in the US than the UK. Ergo it seems unwise at this stage to buy Region B titles.

...I will support some UK releases if there is a benefit. For example the UK release of Terminator 2 will be a must have for me as it's looking superior to the US release.

Tell me about it. I've waited what seems like an age for the UK announced releases of the Studio Canal stuff, but its just not arrived (apart from The Pianist and La Haine). Gave up and ordered the French and Australian releases the other day.
Assuming they have the rights in the UK to release them, I cannot see why they just aren't pulling their finger out. I can't see the French market for HD being any bigger than the UK, so why aren't they getting stuff out over here.

Agree with that - HMV's prices (for example) are disgraceful... having said that I received an email from them the other day trumpeting a new HD-DVD section on their website... the prices here were in line with Sendit. Not been into a store since last year so maybe they've brought their prices down?

I dislike that too - I was going to purchase Appollo 13 on HD-DVD until I saw how big the case was... it put me right off. But I have loads of odd shaped special edition DVD's etc. so maybe I was being a bit daft? Once the novelty of the new format wears off I might not be so picky...

The first batch are due in March I believe. But you're right - they should get a move on.

Indeed - I will probably be the same - but at present everything is nice and 'neat'.
