Create DVD

Hi all.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'll give it a go.

I have downloaded some tv programs for the girlfriend, and she wants to be able watch them on DVD.

They will mostly open with windows media player, but a few are MKV's

Can anyone recommend a free converter/dvd burner program.

Or you can find it other places such as free!

There are ways too. For instance the Western Digital TV HD 1080P Media Player: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo and you won't have to burn anything on DVD. You need an external hard drive though a flash drive would do as well.

I have a PS3, which I stream all my media to, via PS3 media server.

But she wants the episodes on dvd, so she can watch them on her dvd player, in the bedroom.

Her dvd player doesn't have a USB port right? Cause if the files are not that big (<1GB) a dvd player with usb should be fine for that.

I'm also trying to do the same, using an mkv preview. I have tried various tools including mkv2vob and then converting the mpeg2-ts to mpeg2, and ConvertXtoDVD. The DVD is for playing on a Toshiba EP30 standalone hd-dvd player. Whilst no loss of quality from the source would be good (eg playing as hd-dvd), I don't mind slight loss (as would still be similar to DVD and the ep30 is very good at upscaling to my 40" Plasma TV). So simple DVD is good enough for me. The mkv's would then be backed for use on future improved kit.

What I can't seem to figure out is how to keep the original 5.1 channel sound, all the above seem to end up with stereo sound, either MPEG-Layer2 (I think) or AC3.

I'm a complete newbie so struggling to figure out the way forward.

Any advice? Wondered about extracting video and audio streams, and them putting them back together - but woud have no idea how, and worried about likely loss of audio sync or creating jerky video.

ffpmeg2 based converters seem to create jerky video.

Please can someone offer a way to do this (if anyone could confirm its possible by downloading the preview source from the following, that would be even better!)

Never had that problem with convertxtodvd (version 3), I get the original 5.1 audio DD or DTS on my DVDs.

I might have got my programmes mixed up. I may have been using ConvertXtoDVD for something other than MKV which was not 5.1 DD or DTS, I'll try again.

Actually I was wrong. ConvertXtoDVD has retained the DD / DTS audio stream. Not totally happy about the slight loss in quality, but pretty good nontheless.
