24 season 7 blu ray grainy picture

I bought 24 Season 7 the other day and decided to go for the blu ray. But a lot of the scenes have really bad grain on them. To the extent that i am considering taking it back and getting the dvd version instead. Im sure the Sky 1 HD screenings didnt have this really bad grainy effect. Anyone else bought this and found this annoying. I take it the dvd version would not have this problem. Considering it is £15 more I am disappointed to say the least.

Hasn't 24 always had quite a grainy look ? I suppose you only really notice it now because with Blu-ray you can clearly see the grain.

always been grainy HD just brings it out more what you have is just as intended... Do yourself a favour and embrace the grain!

Always has been grainy. The DVD's never looked that great and as DVD does not have the resolution to show grain unless it is very grainy, the grain just comes out in a mess and can suffer from pixelation (especially in the dark scenes). The HD versions of 24 (not seen the BD yet) show the grain how it supposed to look with more detail at the same time.

I have seasons 1 to 6 on DVD but will wait for the BD of Season 7 once it is about 50% cheaper than it is now.

Does season 7 come with Redemption or is that still has to be bought separately?

Alas, no.

Albeit a pilot movie episode to Season 7, REDEMPTION is a seperate purchase, and does not come with Season 7 on either the DVD or Blu-Ray box sets. However, if you buy the 24 COMPLETE SERIES DVD SET (which has Seasons 1-7 in it, all in slimline DVD cases), REDEMPTION does come with it - in a regular standard-sized DVD Amaray case.

Thanks. I have actually seen the Sky version during there free pass weekend. A BD of the extended version would have nice.

So, have they changed the packaging for the individual DVD seasons again? I have season 1 to 6 in the digistack packaging and like my TV stuff looking the same.

I think what confused me is that I have seen Season 7 on Sky 1 in HD and the grainy picture was not so noticiable as it is on the blu ray. Why is that?

Never seen Sky HD but as a guess, I would say BD having a higher bitrate plus resolution being progressive. Isn't Sky 1080i?

I would say that's exactly it and yes sky is 1080i.

When i saw it on sky hd it was just as grainy but as i said that doesn't affect my enjoyment of the piece especially as it's a stylistic choice by the film makers.

As for the standalone before season 7 I thought it was awful and the product placement was jarringly bad.

Well, yes and no. I shall endeavour to explain...

"24" has always been released in the large, gatefold packages, with individual clear trays in which each of the discs are seated. These are identical to the old "The X-Files" boxed sets, when they originally retailed for about £79-99 each.

However, about a year ago, Fox redesigned the packaging a little. They made the packaging thinner, by about 1/3rd, and a fraction shorter in height (and by fraction, I'm talking maybe 3-5mm at most!). All of the first 6 seasons were re-released in the run up to last Christmas, in this new packaging, and with a slight price reduction too.

With Season 7, this has been released in this same, slightly shorter, slightly thinner packaging. For anyone who's collected the series since it was released on DVD, you won't be unduly affected, in terms of aesthetics. Especially, since plenty of stockists (online and high-street) still stock a mixture of both the old, original releases of "24" and the new, amended releases of the show too.

The only BIG difference, is for people who are intending to buy the newly released COMPLETE Series Boxed Set, which contains Seasons 1-7 and "Redemption". In previous annual releases, the boxed sets, were simply all of the season-by-season sets, housed in one giant thick outer cardboard box. This year, though, Fox have released the set with ALL of the DVD's in clear, thinpack DVD cases, each housing 2 discs. This allows them to keep the packaging down to a reasonable size. The exception, is that this boxed set contains the standard-sized Amaray case of "Redemption", though there are no details stating if it is the TV Version or the slightly expanded edition with about 5-minutes of unseen footage, and extras.

Going back to dvd because of grain on HD is like putting your blurry ashtray glasses back on after removing them and realising they were actually obscurring your vision, but the world is a horrible dirty place and you would rather see less of it anyway.....
