Thanks: Gave 1,995, Got 446 | Best Wire Boxset to get (Region 1/2 etc)?
Hi all,
I've got to give this series another go, but I'm think of a boxset for extras etc?
Firstly, is it worth getting a boxset over 5 x individual series and secondly, which region boxset is the best to get in terms of extras etc.
Please let me know and I'll be sure to get SWMBO to tell Santa!
Many thanks.

I'm not sure which region stacks up best in terms of extras, although these days they tend to be very similar.
However as a rule of thumb, with SD material I'd be inclined to purchase from the "native" region to avoid the pitfalls of sloppy (or even half-decent) standards conversion.
I'm currently watching series 1 of "The Wire" (borrowed from a family member) and it's a PAL (UK release) and I really notice the juddering you get on camera pans. I *think* this is due to the fact that it was shot at 24fps with 3:2 pulldown for US broadcast/release, with the PAL version being taken from the NTSC master rather than a 24fps version sped up to 25fps as is normally the case with a film.
So I definitely think if you can a Region 1 (or at least NTSC/60HZ native) release would be better for this. I've also heard bad things about one of the PAL editions of HBO's "Carnivale" so would advise the same thing with this, or hopefully they'll issue it on Blu-ray soon...

Good knowledge, thanks.
I think I'm going to go for the US/Region 1 versions, but now I need to know if there's any advantage of the complete boxset over individual season!

i think the r2 boxset release is just all the individual wire series put into a box to hold them all together. all the extras, not that theres many, are on each of the invidual series discs.cant see any reason of getting them with the box if it costs extra might as well just get them individually
well worth getting into probably one of the best tv series ever made

I'd go for the region 1s for the same reason as norliss mentioned, for those wishing for a Blu-ray release, some good reading here as to why it will probably not happen. The show was never intended to be viewed in HD it was meant to look gritty and be in SD |

The wire was never great for PQ and was only 4:3 but what a great programme! I just forgot the PQ and enjoyed all series'. I even watched season 5 on divx!
