Raiders Of the lost ark

When this movie was re-released on dvd a few years back in the boxset did they remaster the sound or alter it at all?
I watched it last night and some of the gunshots and punch effects sounded a bit muted compared to what i remember?
Any one know if they messed with it?

Hi,

As far as I know, no remastering was done.

However, all 3 Indiana Jones movies will be re-released in brand, spanking new transfers, with lovingly remastered picture and sound, AND hopefully the full, uncut version of Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, in/around May/June 2008 in the UK, to tie-in with the cinema release of Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull!

In the cinema you saw "Mola Ram" *sp pull the heart out of the guy in the cage, then he turns around and you can still see the heart beating.

Plus some whipping of kids if I remember rightly.

I'm sure most releases have this included though - perhaps not the 3 disc set but prior video versions certainly did. I only know this as when the film was broadcasted on television I noticed the edited heart scene.....

Re: Raiders Of the lost ark

Temple of Doom's never been available in the UK uncut, that's a fact. It was cut by 1 minute 6 seconds to get a PG cert back in 1984 for its theatrical release and that's the version Paramount always submitted for any subsequent home vid/DVD releases.

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classi...9?OpenDocument

If you wanted it uncut on any format you've always had to import it on either vhs/laserdisc/dvd.

A lot of fuss over a pretty bad fake heart being pulled out of someone's chest if you ask me but I won't deny the thrill I got the first time I finally saw it uncut

I had UK VHS with both those scenes. I can't remember if they were proper bought VHS or recorded of the TV (would have been early 1990's) I remember it being cut on TV later on.

Never seen watch any of the films on DVD yet.

1 minute and 6 seconds? I have the Region 1 version and the heart being pulled out is ever-so-slightly longer (the heart does pump in the Region 2 version as well) and when Indy sees the kids being beaten in the mines he shouts at one of the Thugees "Leave him alone you b*stard" but those two scenes alone still don't amount to a minute and six seconds.

Temple Of Doom was on the Beeb the other night and I'd forgotten how good it was - Spielberg has always said it's his least favourite as it's so dark but I reckon it's easily as good as the other two. In fact Lucas and Spielberg never misstepped once with these films.

Re: Raiders Of the lost ark

Taken from the Melon Farmers website:-

Quote:
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984 US film by Steven Spielberg.

1:06s cuts for both cinema and video

1. Cuts to a close-up of a heart being ripped from the chest and the subsequent self healing of the chest wound.
2. The deletion of the line 'Leave him alone you *******s' when the Chinese kid is about to be whipped
3. Deletion of the Chinese Kid burning a guard's stomach with a flaming torch (and hence discovering an ability to heal)
4. The sequence in which a sacrifice victim is being lowered into the fiery pit has been shortened and set to different music.
5. Cut to the first 1s or 2s from the shot of his fall in order to delete the image of his head hitting the side of the cliff.

Note, the Leave him alone you *******s line is heard in the 'behind the scenes' documentary on the recently re-released tape, although the line is still cut in the main film!

The American decision to rate the film PG caused huge controversy in the US at the time. In fact, the controversy over the PG rating (which was seen by many as the MPAA caving in to Spielberg and corporate pressure) was largely responsible for the introduction of the PG-13 certificate.

In the UK today, the uncut version would now be considered as 12 or even 12/15 borderline. The PG version is still considered to be one of the stronger PGs ever certificated by the BBFC and has generated more complaints than most over the years.

Re: Raiders Of the lost ark

I must have recorded it off the TV then as I remember all those cuts. I am glad I didn't get the R2 boxset then as I would be annoyed by those cuts.

Re: Raiders Of the lost ark

Good ol' Melon Farmers.

Thanks for that, Stuart, I didn't realise so much had been cut. I have the Region One DVD boxset and the VHS boxset that came out a few years before - the one with the documentary that you mention.

I always thought it was a continuity error where the man whose heart has been ripped out is then seen to have not a scratch on him when he's being lowered into the pit.

Re: Raiders Of the lost ark

A&B differences NTSC laserdisc region 2 DVD and between the sound there is difference and no its not the frame rate speed that I’m worried about it’s the mild difference between some parts of the bass range.

When Indy walks into tent his surprise is to find Marion alive that is accompanied with nice low [tympani boom down at 40Hz] on the laserdisc. The region 2 DVD is, void of this its incredibly mild over the LCR fronts with sub bass extension. The LFE.1 track plays it at very soft level not enough to give the scene total surprise.

If you switch though some of the various audio channels language Hungarian track tends to have lower end within the 40Hz range, granted this is only 4:2:4 Dolby mix.

If I could side by side test the 70mm Dolby stereo original against the DVD to see what differences there are between all the channels I think few interesting things might be found.

Other than that it seems identical to the original theatrical (1981) realise.

Screen capture from the moment at [52m 57s DVD] [55m 44s NTSC laserdisc]

Got the laserdisc playing in the JBL home cinema while I, used the DVD in the pc to screen capture. Truck what track and it’s a whole lot of rumbling!

Also have the following Indiana Jones films on NTSC laserdisc and yes Temple of Doom has all the juicy bits in it, nice.
