Robocop statue coming home to Detroit

Quote:
The half-man, half-cyborg character was made famous through a 1987 movie set in a futuristic, crime-ridden Detroit.

Critics said the statue would only highlight the city's current problems

Just setting down with Mrs Shodan to watch Robocop (1). She started banging her gums about Wesley Snipes and him going to prison for tax evasion. I tried to ignore her, then switched to tell her about the Robocop remake. Then she asked me if Wesley Snipes was going to be Robocop again in the new one again....

A quick trip to google images showed her why she shouldn't bother talking about films.... Lucky she's cute!

Rumored castings include Norton & Penn
Quote:
Edward Norton is circling to, fittingly enough, play the role of Norton, the brilliant mastermind behind bringing Robocop to life...Also circling are Gael Garcia Bernal and Rebecca Hall in strong supporting roles. Bernal would look to be cast as Jack Lewis, Alex’s dashingly handsome police partner who eventually begins a relationship with Hall’s character, Clara, Alex’s former wife before his transformation into Robocop.

There is strong interest in Sean Penn to assume the role of Novack, a right-wing news reporter who sticks to his guns when it comes to his political views.

Gary Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.

Oldman being cast leaves me horribly conflicted. I want to hate this because I love the original so much but now he's in it I'm ever so slightly interested.

Sam Jackson + Robocop could be the awesomest thing ever. Or it could be Snakes On a Plane.

Hugh Laurie is in negotiations to play the villainous, cold, sarcastic CEO of Omni Corp, a mega-corporation responsible for the creation of Robocop.

Eh? I thought Gary Oldman was playing Moreton the creator of Robocop? Sounds like Hugh Laurie is playing Dick Jones?

Omni Corp are ultimately responsible though, hence they can be called Robocop's creator.

I like that the ED design is pretty much the same as the original.

I get the feeling Robocop is going to look quite different from we know. I watched it again the other day and one important thing about the character is the way he walks, he moves his head first and then rotates his body. Hopefully they keep it like this rather than having him do somersaults all over the place like something out of transformers.

Yep, I think Robo's gonna look like some sort of anime-esque carbon fibre mecha, compared to the chunky but iconic original suit.

ED-209 (thats EDD-209 not EEE DDD 209) looks like a MB transformers update over the chunky 80's Mecha look. I think I like the old one better you could at least argue it had some armour.

I'm still waiting for this to be a chick flick with robots from the sounds of the script (the anguish of a man turned machine), I expect this to bomb as hard as the reboot of conan.

The original (directors cut) is in my top 5 films, pitty they never made a squeal (or a cheesy PG tv series (or a U cartoon series (or a crappy direct to dvd movie series))) I'd imagine that would have been good .

Will he be killed via skype + granade after snorting coke of naked hookers as in the original? I doubt it, but maybe they'll up the anti (wonders what the modern day version of 80's coke is, Taliban/Al-Qaeda or bankers?).

* Edit: Just reading that back reminded me how awesome the original was in even the mundane/non robo moments

You never know, the suit could look the same apart from a few minor changes and a different colour. Definitely think they'll make him a lot more agile, and less robotic movements though. Can only wait and see.

The original had the 'right' level of violence to be believable, had poignant moments when Robocop began to remember who he once was (eg. the scenes at his former house), an excellent rich level of 'future' detail (anyone for Sunblock 5000 - ah that's where Avatar got the idea), superb humour in amongst the heavy violence. On the surface, just a simple action film, but in reality far more.

Will the reboot achieve the same? My expectations are very low... Will it be a 15 cert, with no humour, story run by the numbers? Wait and see. The comment about the Conan reboot is probably right on the money: I won't buy this for a dollar!
