Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

Did you know that The Wizard Of Oz syncronises quite well to the CD by Pink Floyd called 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' Some people even think that the Album was made to match the actions in the film.

To syncronise the CD to the film you need to press play on your CD player when the Lion Roars for the third time. Oh yeah, put the CD on repeat.

I do something differently to the usual method. I swap tracks 3 and 4 around. I think it is much better this way.

Anyway...

I was messing around on PowerDvd today, and using Winamp at the same time to Play the Pink Floyd album. This was OK but you could still hear the speaking slightly. It was just an experiment to get the TV to play the CD, and the Film at the same time. You could just use you computer speakers, or a CD player, but I wanted the TV to do everything.

Do you think it's possible to turn of PowerDVD's sound? There is a mute, but that also mutes Winamp, so it's no good. I just need to mute the film.

I hope some of you try this musical, movie experience. It is quite magical.

This is true, yes. It is a coincidence that the music matches the actions. That makes it more interesting really.

Re: Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

You should be able to get a different output plugin for winamp (it may be built in)

for example if Powerdvd outputs using directsound, you could set winamp to use wave output.

Really? I'll try it.

Edit: Well I managed to find a plugin that sounds much better than my old one, but not on a seperate volume control.

There's also quite a nice sync with 2001: a Space Odyssey and the Meddle version of Echoes.
cue it up so that the first ping exactly coincides with when the words 'Jupiter and Beyond the infinite' appear.

dsotm synchs kinda for the first 43 minutes, if you do a bit of googling you will find some geeks had nothing better to do than list the coincidences

but 2001 synchs amazingly and looks great. i've shown this to a few people who were amazed by it

trick is you need the ntsc versions so they play at the right speed, or you need to use soundforge to create speeded up versions of the music to synch to pal (which is 4% faster)

best way to do it if you don't get an already synched version from the dark side of the internet is to rip the audio and synch to the video and author a new dvd and play back

if done right, they can look pretty cool, but on dsotm the more you smoke the better the results

Re: Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

THing is, it doesn't really sync that well... Some stuff seems to be sync'd, but it's purely coincidence. Look at how many "non-syncs" there are!

I downloaded it, and watched it, and counted half a dozen sync's.

Then I printed the "Sync Guide" that came with it and watched it again reading the sync guide. Lo and behold I saw loads of stuff I had "missed" before.

But I didn't miss it, as all it is is power of suggestion! You think it is there, so you see it.

But all that aside, it is worth it for the 5.1 soundtrack if you don't have an SACD player

And with THAT aside, forget downloading this, and download "Dub Side Of The Moon" : a dub reggae version of the Pink Floyd classic, by the Easy Star All-Stars

i presume you mean the version that someone synched to the original quad mix, rather than the sacd. there have been a few different versions, they vary in quality. one had the dialogue playing at the same time as the music.

the synchs are just coincidences, like the opening word "breathe (in the air)" when dorothy cups her hands to her face and blows, something about balancing and race towards an early doom when dorothy walks the fence and falls off, the b/w section lasting the length of side a and money starting when it turns colour, the lunatic is on the grass when the are on the yellow brick road and dancing about, and the heartbeat fades out when the tinman falls down

im sure with a load of the right type of drugs the effects will make far more sense.

Re: Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

Apart from all of the coincidences, you get a new impression of the film. I find the film far darker, more eerie, more fantastic. I wish that the music could be incorporated into a new version of the film, a sort of recreation, using similar actors, taking out the old songs, and replacing them with songs that would work to the Pink Floyd tracks.

Try swapping tracks 3 and 4 around.. you get a really dark feel to the film, unfortunately the tracks do not join up properly, you get a glitch, but its worth it. Winamp can swap the tracks around. There is also a Plugin that gets rid of a short delay in Winamp..called Gapless Audio.. here.. http://www.winamp.com/plugins/browse...sortby=publish

It even mentions that it works with Pink Floyd.

2001, and "turning hal off". Welcome to the machine....

ive played around with syncing movies, ive actually done a full movie soundtrack and edited it over the top.

used soundforge and converted dvd to low spec avi. did all the sound and then popped the sound back over the dvd video.

took about 3 years, i'd do it for a couple of days and leave it for a couple of months.

the wizard of oz/dsotm inspired me to do this. and i believe gilmour when he said its coincidence.

I've messed around with my own syncing too, but just used the method of putting songs into a Winamp list. It's sort of cheating because DSOTM is a coincidence, but making a list is deliberately making a sync. I made a really good list for Kill Bill once, most of my tracks came from The Matrix.

Re: Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

problem is, "talking bits" ruin any sync, you can get some small sync if your using "music with sampled words in", but mostly its miss rather than hit.

i managed to trim the movie i did down by about 20 minutes, but still left the film mostly intact.

highlight of the film was when han solo meets vader. bob marley and the wailers "i shot the sherrif".

other highlight was vader vs luke. aphex twin "come to daddy".

i show it to friends who like star wars, but none star wars fans dont get it.

i was planning on doing "enter the dragon" next, but it would only be about 30 minutes long, which is propably right for this sort of project.

No, the version I have is supposed to be the "best" sync available, and uses the SACD sountrack, sync'd to the digitally remaster'd version of the DVD. Sync wise, it is spot on, but as I said, it's all comincidence, and there are far more "non-sync's" than there are sync's.....

The soundtrack is very good tho - it's from the SACD (apparently) and I guess it has been recorded as each individual channel and the put back together, probably using something like the SurCode DVD Dolby Digital Pro software... If you haven't got an SACD player, this sync is worth the download purely for being able to play the 5.1 soundtrack back via DVD....

Re: Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

It says that the sync works best on Pal if you speed up the music by 4.16%. So I searched the net, and found Soritong, which can play music faster. You can increase the speed by 4%, but not 4.16. I don't know if you can do this in Winamp, or some other way.

Re: Wizard Of Oz / Dark Side Of The Moon..Sync

just need to know the start and end frames, and stretch the audio to fit.
(its a cheap way of doing it).

either that or getting the time in seconds and multiplying by the 1.0416 and time stretching to the new value.

ive got the audio, will pop into hmv and might pickup the video. will need to know what the start and end frames roughly are though to see how good it is.

problem is with these things, is that you hit other syncs and can spend hours sliding the track either way to try and get the most sync hits.

the other problem is are we looking at ntsc time, or pal time !!?!!

NTSC is supposed to be correct.. Pal is 4.16% slow. Timed to the third roar of the lion. You are not really supposed to slide anything to get more syncs, the point is to see the coincidences, without cheating. I swap tracks 3 and 4 around because, maybe the album was tracked in the wrong order. I mean, at the end of the day you have a list of tracks for an album, and you could really put them in any order. They only fade together after you have joined them up. When I swap these tracks around it really does seem like the album was made for the film...IMO You actually get a tornado sound during the tornado, which doesn't happen without swapping the tracks around. Plus a lot of really good new syncs.. words that fit, and a strange drum solo to lip movements.
