Thumbs up Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence

Wow. Stunning art work. Fabulous sound; like the way characters who have been heavily modified and are nearly Cyborg (e.g. Batou), their voices blend in and out of stereo/surround/techno/normal kind of thing (unless it was because I was poorly when I was watching it and was halucinating that).

It's said In the year 2032, Batou, a cyborg detective for the anti-terrorist unit Public Security Section 9, investigates the case of a female robot--one created solely for sexual pleasure--who slaughtered her owner...

It's going to need a couple more viewings before I can tell *** is happening in this film. Completely mad and typical future crazyness from Mamoru Oshii.

All i can say is that this movie (and the 1st one) rocks. An interesting point about the 1st one is that you see where the Matrix got most of its visual ideas from (the green charcters across the screen and cables going in the back of heads etc.).

If you like these (and I love them!) than I can wholeheartedly recommend Appleseed as well. Visuals as stunning as Innocence and a gripping SF storyline to complete the package.

The US or UK steelbooks are very nice editions for this.

Sounds good Lord Midas. Anyone know where Standalone Complex fits into the timeline of the GITS series? I've seen the original GITS so just wondering what I should watch next, cheers.

Well I watched it tonight and I did not rate it. Definitely not on par with the original and the first half hour was as boring as hell.

As a previous poster said, check out Appleseed, superb.

The appleseed cartoon is way better than the CGI version though.

Macross + and Cowboy Bebop are amazing.

I really find it bizarre how many people say this.

The Appleseed CGI movie in my opinion is about 8/10 whilst the older cartoon is prob 4/10. Why anyone could rate the cartoon better than the CGI is something I personally find hard to comprehend.

Not yet seen Macross but Cowboy Bebop was in my opinion very boring (despite the very frequent positive reviews).

Alot of anime fans seem to have a particular taste to their genre so any reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. The movie Spirited Away for example recieved an enormous amount of positive reviews but it is so rubbish that I couldnt even watch it to the end despite attempting to twice.

I found Ghost in the Shell 1 to be good (approx 6/10) but not as good as some make it out to be. I started to watch Ghost in the Shell 2 but found in tiring after 1 hour. Will give it a second attempt another day.

The best anime/CGI movie ever produced is Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.

Fans of GITS and Appleseed will love FF Advent Children.

I think GITS 1 is really good, although it doesnt explain itself very well and takes a few watches to follow, I watched it yesterday in Japanese with subtitles and enjoyed it alot more, reading along seems to help get a better understanding as to whats going on, Artwork is flawless cant really knock it, shame japanese mix is 2.0

English dubs are without exception dreadful. You'll never get the full flavour and enjoyment from an anime without watching it in Japanese with subs.

Ooo, I've not heard of the Advent Children film. I loved the Final Fantasy: Spirits Within film, though a lot of peeps seemed to hate it. Awesome CG and a clever Gaia Spirit shenanigan storyline thing going on.

Is Advent Children on a par with the Spirits Within?

The animation in FFVII: Advent Children is astounding, but unless your a big fan of the original FFVII game (like myself) you'll probably be dissapointed in the film, not an incredible storyline.

But any fans of the game who haven't seen the film, you'll love it.

*SPOILERS*

The part where Barret, Red XIIV, Cait Sith, Cid and Yuffy finally show up gave me goosebumps.

*END SPOILERS*

I just watched it this evening on my big screen. Mesmerising visuals, but painfully slow story telling. If you're a fan of the Stand Alone Complex and like its fast-paced action you might well be disappointed with this philosophical wander into the nature of reality and AI. Me, I loved it, but I don't think it's the sort of film you'd want to watch over and over again, or as a casual way to spend a Saturday night in front of the box. Technically it's about as awesome as Anime comes and I found it fascinating from start to finish.

Regards

Mark

I never really liked the ghost in the shell films. I just think it tries to be too clever for a films time limit and in the end doesn't really come out with anything. It lends itself much better to a TV show.

On the question of how the films fit in with the TV series. Same characters but they are not mixed in anyway. Think of it like telling the story of the characters in 2 different ways.

The best anime film i think is spriggan because i think most anime movies don't get enough of the story done because they tend to be branch offs from TV series. Miyazaki makes a good film though. I enjoy watching Princess Mononoke and I'm looking forward to Howls Moving Castle.

Spirits within 5/10
Advent Children 9.5/10

IMHO of course, but Advent Children is ALOT better than Spirits Within.
