Original Episode IV

Just been watching Star Wars Episode IV from the trilogy box-set. Good though it is, I was wondering if the "original" version was available on DVD. I mean the version with the "human" Jabba The Hutt, not the one where Solo does that clumsy "walking over Jabba's tail" thing and other minor changes that were intended to "improve" the original. It's a bit like your gran getting silicon implants: it looks great, but it's somehow wrong.

Well, is there? Help me, Obi Wan, you're my only hope...

The originals are not available on dvd (not legally anyway), Though there have been many copied versions from laserdiscs over the years these are not originals.

It is unlikely that we will ever see the original versions as they are classed as "unfinished" by George Lucas.

Also there was never an "original version" which contained the Jabba scene. It was only ever seen as a deleted scene on a making-of documentary.

im still hoping that when he releases his mega box set of all films for the 30 years anniversary in 2 years time he will actually be generous enough to repay all the fans who made him what he is by putting the originals (remastered colour and soundwise only, not with added CGI or plot alterations) in as well........i mean, c'mon on, even if he decided to charge an extra £25 for putting those discs in i'd willingly pay it...i was sooo disappointed with the box set release of the originals.....waited so long to get them and then he's mucked around with them...
oh i know its his movies and his right to do what he originally wanted to do to them, fair enough, i dont mind seeing an alternative, but as a lifelong fan who has supported his empire by buying the toys, the VHS, more or less every novel and a large amount of comics, plus all the West End Games roleplay gear, and some other parts (altho not the pointless merchandising crap, not in to that)i expected to be given the option of both versions in the box set.......he ruined that, i hope he doesnt ruin it for the 30 years box release....if he does then i know i definitely wont be buying it, i already have 6 films, dont need to see all the extras that i've mostly seen already in various ways.....i just want the original films!

Unfortunately I think you will find that he has gone on record stating that the "original" versions will never again be released on any format - only his new versions.

HI,

It's true. Lucas has categorically stated that the original 1977, 1980 and 1983 versions of the original Trilogy will never be released onto DVD, as (allegedly) the masters do not exist anymore. (Cough, cough, cough!)

The only way you can get the original versions, is by locating a legitimate VHS copy from one of the numerous trilogy taped releases through secondhand stores, jumble sales, or via e-Bay.

Cool

They did a spoof of him as well as SS (probably because of ET) on South Park about him not realising his originals.

As for recoloring the original I though the laser fire from the various space ship look way to bright and garish compared with the original.

I don't think GL has even finished tinkering, I expect more changes to the original trilogy when they are next released, also Yoda is getting redone in the EpI... He will never stop messing with them - IDIOT

Slightly off topic, but going through the movies in order, watched EPI last night, it is a better movie than I though, but I still can not believe how badly young Anikin is! Too many "Yipppees" and other irritating lines.
