I Don't Understand Warner & DTS - Help!

Hi guys,

Everyone knows Warner Brothers does not include DTS soundtracks on their dvds, right? But can someone explain to me the reason why?

And how come the new releases of the first Batman films are now being released with a DTS soundtracks but the latest Batman film, Batman Begins is only DD5.1 . The way i look at it is, if Warner can put a DTS soundtrack on these older Batman films surely its not so hard for them to include it on their new releases, or am i missing something??

I really don't understand it!

Please help my feeble brain compute!!

Regards,

It could be argued that there's no need. A well mastered DD5.1 track can be pretty much as good as a DTS one.

It goes back to when Warners first released DTS tracks on their DVD's (Twister and a few others), their engineers at the time are reported to have felt unhappy with the quality so future DVD releases went without. When companies related to Warners released a few of their titles with DTS (Robin Hood Prince of Thieves) Warner had no choice but to re-evaluate their stance. I believe it was at this point that DTS themselves became involved and found out that the original engineers had misunderstood the encoding standard and had been mastering mixes too hot. Warner will release some DVD's with DTS from now on, but it mainly comes down to the director and disc size these days, no other reason. The above is what i managed to gleen from industry insiders and is not first hand.

Thanks alot for explaining.
Personally i prefer DTS to DD. On all the films i have watched on both formats DTS has been noticably better, alot more dynamic. Saving Private Ryan for example... i only had the single disc DD edition (purchased before i got my HC system) and was quite dissapointed with the soundtrack and found it a bit flat, i then read the review on here of the DTS version and so purchased the 2 disc DTS version and its awesome! The difference is like chalk and cheese and i'm very happy that i also purchased the DTS version.

My main concern is that i have just purchased Batman Begins DE R1 but i'll be very dissapointed if they release another edition a few months down the line with DTS. Is this likely?

Depends where you purchase it really. It was a Warner / Universal co-production. Warner has the US distribution rights, & Universal released it in the UK.

No details for R2 specs, but US disc is DD5.1 only according to specs.

I've noticed Robots on region 1 has a DTS soundtrack too, but it's been omitted from the region 2 version ( amongst other films ).. Isn't it about time us Europeans get treated with a bit more respect and given at least a choice ?
On many films I've got i tend to prefer the DTS as the preferable option ... Surely in theory ( excluding the mastering expertise ) less compression and a higher bit-rate is more appealing ?

Or is our minds playing tricks on us because we get told in the press that it is better ?

But they are the single disc editions.
and HMV lists them all as DD5.1 ??
http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayP...;-1&sku=814443
£11.99

So does Play.com
http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page...=57&g=72&pa=sr
£23.99

I normally buy the special editions where available, mainly because they are more likely to have better PQ and audio (esp if DTS available) ... but I may make an exception at the price of £11.99 for all 4 films (esp if they have DTS!)

Anybody confirm, with evidence please?
...or were you talking about the 2 disc editions of each film only?

Only the new 2 disc SE's have DTS.

the links you've given are to a cheap re-release of the old boxset.

As far as I know, Warners didn't bother to release the Special Editions anthology boxset in the UK, only the four individual SE releases.

I've been told www.Loaded247.com are selling the anthology for £35.99?
(I can't access the link!)
http://www.loaded247.com/s/R1_DVD/id...ogy_1989-1997/

The Batman Anthology is £41.99 at CD Wow
http://www9.cd-wow.com/detail_result...30&affid=12376
for R3. The R1 is £2 more.

Loaded claim to be selling it, but I don't think anyone who's ordered it has actually received it (even those who pre-ordered it). Their website still says something like 'ships in 3-5 days', but if you email or phone them, they say the set has been recalled due to manufacturing issues - which is a load of EDIT.

Movietyme have it for £39.99 on their Next Day Despatch page: http://www.movietyme.com/catalog/pro...ducts_id=29420

not quite as cheap as Loaded, but at least you'll get it!
