The Descent

Thought this was good fun with some nice scares...right up to the point where it goes all aliens meets predator with a bit of deliverence thrown in for good measure, and everyone reverts to type and puts on their 'deadmeat', 'not to be trusted' or 'i'm supposed to be ripley' hats.

Unlike many films of its ilk, it was good to see a nice slow and steady build-up (i think it's about 50 minutes or so until the blood starts to flow)...but then sadly the entire third act seems very rushed and it's hatchet and despatch all the way!

And wasn't it a shame that Marshall had to go and give it an american setting (financial backing behind that one I suppose)? I really liked the fact that dog soldiers had a uk setting...it was nice to see the yanks hadn't totally cornered the market in creepy back-of-beyond settings, eh?

What did everyone else think???

I really really enjoyed it
but then again I'm an AvP fan

I enjoyed it - the DTS track was very creepy. I dont think it was as good as Dog Soliders (which was film in Luxemburg by the way) but it was all right. I've buy it when it hits the bogof deals.

To Gary D: Well you learn something new every day. I didn't realise Dog Soldiers was filmed in Luxembourg...but at least it was set in the UK, and I for one want to see more monsters creeping about this nation's wonderfully-creepy woodlands!!!

To Lion: don't be ashamed about liking AvP...we all have our own dvd dark little secrets (ok, ok, I admit it: I really, really like Chill Factor!). For me, the real crime with AvP was that it could have killed off two of my favourite movie franchises (ok, pred 2 was a bit crap, and alien resurection was a load of old tosh, but i just love those beasties!!!).

you should listen to the chat track - its one of the best ever. i've watched/listened to it three times now and it makes me cry its so funny. The entire cast is sat in front of a TV with a large amount of beer. 90 mins later they are a bit drunk and as such get very very funny. its better than i lot of films i've seen

For info: the shots you see of soliders walking about are mostly the crew. they went to scotland to film a few establishing shots.

Sorry to highjack the thread, but hell yeah For those that have not listened to it, the commentary track on Dog Soilders is superb. I would recommend all who have the disc to listen to it

Cheers

sorry but i watched it monday and was less then impressed

soundtrack is good though in DTS

MOD Edit: SPOILER REMOVED
the 'creatures' were like gollum - if they cannot see because they have evolved to live underground how the hell do they hunt above ground - and they seem to have lost their sense of smell - but their hearing is good!!!

I thought it was pretty poor.

The final third was too far removed from the creepy build up and I lost interest almost as soon as the creatures made an appearence. The 'jump' scenes were predictable and I really, really didn't like the way it turned into an action movie. The fact that there was virtually zero character development kind of lead to me not giving a damn who lived or died. That said, I was very leased to see the irritatingly 'extreme' irish girl die though.

MOD Edit, spoiler removed, come on guys, not everyone has seen the film yet

The DTS soundtrack, as mentioned, was very impressive as was the closing credits music.

Overrated.

And why the hell were they taking ice axes into a pothole?

Happily, I received my copy of the long, long-awaited Grindhouse release of Cannibal Holocaust a few weeks ago. Now that's a horror movie.

I got this over a week ago but haven't watched it yet.

I guess I'm just too scared to watch it (Nah not really - Just need to be in the mood for a good horror film I think)

I loved Dog Soldiers and am really looking forward to (eventually) watching this!

One of the better western horrors I have seen in a while.

Was impressed by quite a few aspects of the film.....yeah, there were a few p(l)ot holes but what film doesn't suffer from them nowadays?

My main critisism was the opening of the film.....seemed a bit odd to show that as the reason why they went adventuring over a year later......kept on expecting something later in the film to tie-in with the opening.

Really like this film, went to see it at the cinema and couldn't wait for the DVD which has good PQ and SQ. Nice to see somebody not afraid to release an 18 for a change. Dog Soldiers is one of my favorite films of recent times, the only thing I think the descent misses is the black humour element

Good Film got my copy on Friday from PLAY.Com. The DTS soundtrack is great! I would recommend this film. Really makes you feel like you are in a cave. One of my friends (A girl) freaked out totally due to the claustrophobic nature of the film.

Oh dear,

Watched this last night. A few bad actresses with very distracting accents. One could hardly talk, just a silly squeak. Music played at inappropriate times, did not go with the "film" at all.

This is the sort of film where you do not care what happens to anyone in it. So what if the boring cow is stuck in a hole.

IMHO of course

It wasn't meant to be the reason they go adventuring. But it was a key element in the film. Setting up the ambiguity regards what happens later and explaining the tension between some of the characters. Splendid stuff and not a bovine in sight.
