which sound format is better DTS or 5.1?

I am about to purchase a music dvd from play.com, it comes in 2 formats multi channel 5.1 or DTS. I have a home cinema system which plays both formats, but which one should I choose to get the best sound quality?

It purely a matter of preferance. Some people prefer dd/multi-channel, others (like myself) prefer a DTS soundtrack.

So imoh I'd go for the DTS version, but not everyone would agree

The music contains moderate to heavy bass levels, so with that in mind which one should I go for?

Worms... Can.... Open!

You could argue about it all day, some DD tracks are better than the DTS equivalent and vice versa, however IMO if both tracks are made to their full potential i would say DTS is the one to go for.....

5.1 is not a codec but the way in which sound is delivered to your home cinema system (i.e. 2 front speakers; 2 rears and a centre speaker – the sub is the .1 of the 5.1). I think what you are referring to is the comparison between Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1. Either way, your amp should be able to play both – so just see what you prefer.

I'm surprised a disc will come in two formats (unless one is an older version) - have you got a link?

dts or 5.1 in my experience on music dvds are both crap!
dts on the coldplay live dvd was flat as hell , the dolby version was only marginally better!
ive always found you can tell which one they put the effort into by listening(never as close as dvd film releases)

i've got a version of Pink Floyds "Wish you were here" which is stunning - i dont even think its real, a friend gave it to me. it sounds realll really good. other than that my only experiance is through DVD video DTS tracks like Peter Gabriel's stuff - which again is jawdropping.

DD tends to be more airy ,light and DTS more tight often, DD is louder on most of my music dvds and I can hear more sounds but I prefer DTS because it seems to concerntrate on the instruments without a lot of external distraction.

Neither format has any inherent technical superiority over the other: it comes down entirely to how well the mix is done in each individual case.

I'm no nearer to deciding, I'll just decide at a flip of a coin and go with that, but my heart says DD 5.1... are people with me?

Hmmmm.... what's your heart got to do with it? I'd have thought your ears were the better indicators for audio. On a more serious note, I have Muse 'Hullabaloo' and it has both DD and DTS tracks. The DTS wins out for me, it is outstanding, I felt like I was in the crowd. I even developed a French accent during the 90 minute gig. Having said that, as pointed out by others in this thread, it will totally depend on the way the track was engineered/mixed. Not having heard either I'd probably go DTS, but I realise that would be no guarantee.
leighprice23, 'Coldplay live' is a contradiction in terms.

the dts mix was just flat with no life to it, which was a great dissapointment to me .and the dolby version although better (more open) still lacked life

Sorry leigh, just joking. You are quite right each to his own. Pretty much sums up the DD v DTS debate. The bottom line is that the question is based on a flawed premise, that being that one is better than the other. This is simply not the case, each format should be considered on a disc to disc basis. I tend to prefer DTS and in most cases believe it is more dynamic, but I don't think because I happen feel this way that it's necessarily a better format than DD. At least with 'Hullabaloo' you get both formats and can compare and enjoy two sublime soundtracks. The DD is also quite marvellous.
Coldplay not my cuppa but..... Horses for courses and all that

i thought dts is the higher quality format due to its data being at a higher bit rate...
DD is something like 350k/bps
DTS is something like 1.2M/bps

stand to be corrected and yes it is affected by sound levels etc

Its only a theoritically higher bitrate IIRC.

Most DTS tracks are 'half bitrate'.

I personally prefer DTS in almost all circumstances, although I don't think I own a DTS disc that doesn't have a DD5.1 soundtrack as well.

Most Music DVDs come with both DD and DTS.
What is the title of the DVD?

on my DVD-Audio discs i usually prefer the DVD-Audio version to the DTS version, but i prefer DTS to the Dolby Digital 5.1....heh

also some high res DTS discs only have Dolby Digital present as a stereo track, not as a Dolby Digital 5.1 track.......

as for conventional music DVD's (ie ones based on the film format) i only own one with both DD and DTS which is an Orbital one.....i much prefer the DTS mix.....

btw, Dolby Digitals compression technique is better hence the lower bitrate, and DTS compression technique preserves the volume level or something like that, which is why the DTS track sounds louder......because most formats work in different ways there is no way to test which is better.......i think the only way you could do this would be to get the same people to mix a disc with both DD and DTS tracks and see which sounded better as hopefully they would mix them the same.....but even then some of the deeper level stuff concerning the way it all works still affects the way the mixes come back to you........read a very very long explanation of how it all works, there is a link on thread somewhere on the forum, sorry i cant remember where tho...lol

oh, if you have the choice of one or the other, going on the fact that more people say they prefer DTS mixes to DD i guess is a case of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, go with the audience.......at least you know your only losing a tenner or so if they are wrong...not many thousands...heh ;-)
