Best Cary Grant Films???

Advice please on what you think are his best films.

I want to get some as gifts but would value other people's opinions.

Also, a very long time ago I remember seeing one of his comedies where I think he fell off a chair (??) - anyone know which one this might be ?( Sorry this is so vague - I was a child at the time !) I have been trying to remember for years -I just know I laughed such a lot watching this film.

Thanks guys.

Cool

As above 'North by Northwest' an absolute classic although it is not a comedy, and on the DVD I got the music soundtrack can be isolate. One of my favorite films.

'Charade ' is an other goodie of his it is a lighthearted thriller but seem to remember that the DVD quality was not up to much last time I read a review.

North by Northwest
Arsenic and old Lace
Bringing up Baby
Notorious
To Catch a Thief
Philadelphia Story

don't know if her fell from a chair in either of them, Bringing Up Baby is however one of my all time favourite comedies.

I could be wrong, but I think it's likely Holiday with Katherine Hepburn, which I think is the one of the best Cary Grant films and it's a comedy. He does some gymnastics in it - using his previous circus skills experience - including a scene where he lands on the floor after doing a back flip-flop with Hepburn standing on his shoulders (I believe they did the scene themselves, no stand-ins or doubles).

Cary Grant

Thanks all of you - it's hard to choose isn't it ?

By sheer coincidence I was looking something up today on the IMDB and saw a message talking about the film where Cary Grant fell off a chair !!! I nearly fell off one myself as I have been wondering about this film for 30 years . This person thought it was called Awful truth so I shall have to get it now . Hope I still find it funny and I haven't merely built it up in my mind.

Thanks again.

It's got 2 of my favourite Cary Grant films in it, North By Northwest and Arsenic And Old Lace.

I think that must have been one of the films they are on about, although they have put it rather badly.

Lol the best scene he ever did was when he was being assessed for drink driving by the police doctor!

Doctor: 'Have you been drinking?'
Thornhill: 'Doctor I am gassed!'

Doc: 'I would now like permission to draw blood'
Thornhill: 'How disgusting!'

Surely Bringing Up Baby is up there too. I've got the R1 SE. Notorious is perhaps his best non-comedy role.

Charade = new Criterion edition. Reviewed here

I think the best ones have all been mentioned:
Bringing Up Baby
Arsenic And Old Lace
Charade
North By North West

A couple of others which spring to mind:
To Catch A Thief (another Hitchcock I think)
Another comedy (I can't remember the title) - he is a scientist who invents a "youth potion". I think Marilyn Monroe had a small part in this one.

Another thing. Some one posted recently about a website which has public domain films which can be downloaded. I can't remember the address, but I noticed that they had Charade there.

Just followed the play.com link. The title I had forgotten was "Monkey Business". Another good film listed is "His Girl Friday". This was remade with Lemmon/Matthau (I think it was called "Hold The Front Page") and again with Burt Reynolds.

Best comedies are "Bringing Up Baby", "His Girl Friday" and "Arsenic And Old Lace". "North By Northwest" is probably his best "straight" film.

His Girl Friday - funniest
Notorious - best straight performance

Philladelphia Story (EDIT: 7.99 2 Disc at sendit.com) - just generally good. Interesting trivia - he gave his entire fee for this film to the british war effort (which he also did for Arsenic and Old Lace except to the US).

Holiday is a brilliant film. Yes the gymnastics are superb. When Katherine Hepburn stands on his shoulders and they both tumble forward into a roll and finish on the floor sat behind each other - brilliant. Im pretty sure that was for real. He had a pretty Chaplin-esque childhood and was in some kind travelling circus/slapstick group.

I have a soft spot for "I was a Male War Bride" which I don't believe has been mentioned yet. Probably not his best movie but it was the first Cary Grant movie I saw and so ranks amongst his top five for me.

Glad you said that as Im sure they said he was a bit tight with his money in a documentary on the North By Northwest. Glad to here when it came to it he was generous. Good on you Cary
