Thumbs up

On the train back from the IMAX @ Waterloo after watching this this with my son and all I can say is WOW.

That was a brilliant piece of cinema. Everything just worked and I have to agree with the folks saying this is the best of the 3.

I'm not going to post spoilers or anything like that, I just wanted to jump in and say how goddam brilliant this film is-especially in IMAX.

£30 for me and my son=£30 very well spent IMO.

A bit thumbs up for the musical score too, it was very fitting and atmospheric.

I'm off again with my friends to see this, I reckon I'll enjoy it even more 2nd time around.

Saw this on Thursday evening. Personally I didn't think it was a scratch on The Dark Knight which I thought was much better rounded in it's story and characters compared to 'Rises'. I actually thought 'Rises' was the weakest of the 3 films in terms of story , atmosphere and effects. I think Nolan made some mistakes here and there, the biggest being Bain's legibility in a fair few of Hardy's scenes.

The core of the story itself isn't particularly original, by this I mean the method in which our mercenaries choose to

destroy Gotham City
. I found the Scarecrow's method in 'Begins' a lot more intriguing and interesting by comparison.

For me the ending was a little lame. Yes, parts of it can be construed in one of two ways, but I found the twist which related

Miranda to Bane
to be a little weak for my liking as well as the direction of Gordon-Levitt's character at the end too...

There was much I did like about it, but also much I disliked about it which leans me more toward a slight disappointment at the trilogy's conclusion, especially after all of the hype recently.

7/10 for me.
I can see why hardcore Batman followers will love it and more likely score it a lot higher.

Hi IL Cattivo, I just wondered - did you see it in an IMAX theatre or normal cinema? I saw it in our local Odeon cinema and had no problems with Bane's dialogue (although after seeing the trailers, I was expecting something really awful!).

My fingers are firmly crossed that the audio comes out clearly on the bluray - we'll wait and see

They planned a DK game but it was cancelled

There is a Dark Knight Rises game, but for mobile devices only

The Dark Knight Rises The Mobile Game Trailer - YouTube

Both Arkham City/Arkham Asylum are fantastic games which offer same type of theme storywise as the movies.

Nolen would be proud in all honest.

There are parts of the storyline and character development that mimics nolans masterpiece.

Arkham City/Arkham Asylum are the best superhero games ever made

I thought that the DK was an amazing film when it was released. The way that Nolan had woven a very tight story with great acting from all the cast, especially Heath Ledger. The film was almost like a orchestrated classical music. Setting up each scene and executing with rhythm and pacing.Batman on a HK building swooping in to get Lau, The bank hiest, and the truck flip with the joker. It was a movie that went beyond the superhero genre. The pacing, editing and most importantly a story that had sub plots.Which got you thinking about who to trust and who not to and the way the joker broke you down physically as well as mentally which can only be a testament Heath Ledgers performance in other words a master piece.

I watched the DKR and was very disappointed.Without giving to much away.It lacked pacing, the editing was all over the place, there were too many plot holes. Actors in their roles were all to brief. The fight scenes between batman and bane were all over the place and over to quickly and the acting was mediocre.Sorry to say but this is not what I expected from Nolan. It's almost like he couldn't be bothered.

I also find myself, surprisingly, in the disappointed camp. I thought it the weakest of the 3 films sadly.

Saw this for he second time this morning, slightly less people than the first time, only about 10 people. Seemed to pass quicker his time but maybe that's because I curbed my fluid intake so I wasn't bursting for the loo, lol. Still think its a great film and the second fight with Bane was even more brutal so reminded me of Hardy in Warrior. Can't wait for the blu ray, just debating whether it's worth the outlay for an IMAX viewing.

i have not seen the IMAX 70mm version, but by all accounts that is the best way to see it, considering Nolan filmed around 60mins of footage for the format

How was it brutal? There were few shots from batman, a few shots from bane. Batman elbows him in the face and it's over. The fight was too short.

What are you on about?Spoiler

what about the crushing early blows Bane puts in? Batman then concentrating blow after blow on his mask? Losing control totally as he did in the Joker interrogation,"WHERE'S THE TRIGGER, WHERE IS IT? WHEERREEE IS IT?" The look of complete dismay and horror in his eyes when Talia reveals herself.

After seeing this the after night, maybe my expectations were too high or i just appreciated Ledgers Joker far better, but it just didn't hit the spot for me. It was a good film which was marred by certain things. Banes talking really ruined it for me. While i like Hardy as an actor that contraption covered his mouth which spoilt his performance and as im not someone who ever bought the comics, what the hell was that thing on his mouth.
Dont want to add any spoiler for those who havent seen the film but I felt the main baddy was comparitively weak. I did like that Murphy reprised his role but again it could have been more for me. Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman were underused however Michael Caine put in a fantastic performance and IMO outshone Bale.
It may be because i saw TDK at IMAX where as i saw this on a local screen, although there were only 5 of us in there which was fantastic from my perspective.
Not something i would rush to see again but ledgers performance I could watch all day

Okay I saw the movie for the second time last time.

First things first ....

My 1st viewing was at an IMAX cinema and the experience was amazing !
HUGE screen and immense thumping sound system.
On reflection, this element really 'made' the overall experience and totally immerses you in the film.

Last night, I went to a different none imax cinema and oh dear, what a different experience.
Small screen, puny by comparison, and sound was no where near loud enough or of the same clarity / oomph of the IMAX.

Verdict, people you must seek out an IMAX viewing of this film and any other whenever the movie is shown in IMAX theatres, for me it makes such a huge difference and is more than worthy of the premium prices they charge, for the overall experience it is worth it ... and some !

okay, so other than being underwhelmed by the cinema, how did I feel about the film in second viewing.

As others have noted, you don't get the excitement of seeing it for the 1st time (obviously) having that on the edge of your seat experience wondering what is going to happen but ... being able to anticipate key scenes is good and I was certainly able to look out for certain elements this time and take in the story and dialogue a lot more, so I do have a much greater understanding of the film now.

First viewing (IMAX) i gave it 10/10, and although the inferior viewing experience did dilute the overall effect and impact of the movie I still stand by my mark of 10. It is a close call if TDKR or TDk is best, to be honest I don't care, as I think they are both fantastic - I look upon them more as a complete trilogy now and as 3 films combined they are way up there in my fave films ever league table.

They key scenes in TDKR were as good the second time too and the climax action scene was just frickin brilliant and oh my god that Zimmer score is just sublime and elevates the film so much - I just missed the bass thumping in my chest as it did in the IMAX though. I did feel there was a lot of music missing from the OST though and there were lots of different mixes in the film that differ from the score .. no doubt a future release of the OST in a complete form will address that, I hope so.

Now I wanna go back to the IMAX for one last cinema viewing, then I will be content and will anxiously await the blu ray release in December ... what a film !

If the Blu is anything like TDK, we're in for a treat.

The visuals and the HD audio watched via my projector on a 95" screen makes for one of my fave Blus.

Also looking forward to the Blu because of all the extra IMAX scenes.

:
I believe The Dark Knight was also made for IMAX viewing. I watched that at a local Cineworld multiplex screening when it first came out, the same as I did with 'Rises' last week, but found TDK to be far more enjoyable, atmospheric and immersive compared to this latest outing.

For me it's not just about the size of the screen or the loudness of the sound which makes a movie tick for me. So many other factors have to fall into place for it to give me the wow factor. Story, script, structure, effects, performances etc etc..

For me I felt 'Rises' had much more emphasis around Bruce Wayne as a character rather than his alter ego Batman. Nolan used many elements within Batman Begins as his platform and basis for the 'Rises' story, whereas TDK I felt stood out on it's own as something new & refreshing from all angles.

It's quite often the case that the deeper you go into sequels the more they degrade in quality and for me this is very much the case here with Nolan's final instalment in his Batman series.

To sum it up for me... The Dark Knight is to The Empire Strikes Back as The Dark Knight Rises is to Return Of The Jedi.

No way hosé. I didn't see no furry critters nub nubbing their way through the streets of Gotham in The Dark Knight Rises.

Watched it last night on a standard screen and while I enjoyed the film, I left somewhat disappointed.
Watched TDK last week on Blu at home and it is the stronger film for me.
TDKR is a very well made piece, great soundtrack, screen unfortunately had washed out blacks, so will view again when released on Blu.
Preferred Chicago to NY, maybe just looked cleaner on screen due to being a different season.
Story wise, a bit weak towards the end, some great performances though all round.

8/10

I know it's a different kettle of fish but it's still no Inception for me!

I do sometimes despair. Did you pay any attention to the film?

The mask is a device that constantly provides pain killing anaesthetic. Bane is in constant pain after being beaten to a pulp
post

Talia's escape from the prison
and subsequent

botched administrations from the prisoner who was a doctor. This was all explained to Bruce while he was in the prison. That was why in the second fight with Bane Batman targetted the mask and when the tubes were broken off Bane was beaten as much by his own pain as by Batman.

It doesn't have to be long to be brutal, look at the shots Bane puts just before he ends up smashing the pillar with his hands, he reigns down some very fast and rapid body shots.

Do you know I'd never realised they'd switched to NY from Chicago for Gotham, I mean I knew it was NY but it just didn't click, I suppose you couldn't have had the same scenario in Chicago.

hence the

fantastic brief scene where he starts smashing 10 bells out of the wall in a slightly sped up scene during the end fight
.... great moment!!

no i watched it with my eyes closed and hands over my ears

but as im someone who ACTUALLY deals with pain on a daily basis, I can see that i need to get me ones of those do dah thingys. You would have thought sodium channel blocking injections would have been a better more conventional way of blocking his pain.
Why didnt batman just grab this then when

he was stabbed or can he block pain far more effectively when he was moving around afterwards.. meh

I understood the plot thanks, I felt that blocking banes mouth negated his acting ability, similar to V for Vendetta, but im guessing you didnt understand the point i was making.... i wont despair though , there is hope for you.

Yeah that WAS a great moment 100% agree, I noticed that particular moment more last night on 2nd viewing.

I thought the character of Bane in general was great and thought his voice was actually really fitting ... very OTT voice and theatrical and condecending almost but I loved it as i did Tom Hardy's performance.

Every scene Bane was in (like the Joker in TDK) had me fixed to the screen. Hardy did a great job with his eyes and body language.

I agree with a lot of this. The design decision for Bane didnt work for me to be honest. The mask idea seemed a bit of a mixmash of the comic Bane (the venom steroid tubes and his mexican wrestler mask) and as such I also felt a little disconnected from the acting. As a result I never bought into the character and for me he was the weakest villain of the 3 films so far.

Off on a tangent but the plus of Imax is much shorter sit-through of trailers than normal cinema chains. Downside was the exclusive Imax trailer for Skyfall. Continuation of that damned trend to give away most of the plot in the trailer. Who is running the industry?! And back to reality

Smashing into a pillar doesn't constitute a great fight.Look the first Bourne movie. The first fight in
his apartment,a combination of martial arts and boxing.Very well choreographed and you could see what was going on.Bourne using his environment to out class his opponent. In this fight everything to closed in and you can't really get to appreciate the fight. It's well known that Nolan is not very good at shooting fight scenes.look again, he cuts very quickly and the editing is uneven. But as long as you liked the movie thats the most important thing.I don't think it's up to Nolan's standards.I expected more.

Mo matter how much you expected, the director is rarely the guy who edits the movie, and I don't think Nolan is the editor of this movie.
