How long does a release on Blu Ray/DVD take?

How long does a movie at the cinema take to get released on Blu Ray/DVD, is it 3 or 4 months after final screening in cinemas?

I have just seen The Dark Knight Rises, and I am thoroughly impressed with it, I think Christopher Nolan has done a marvelous job with all 3 of the Batman Movies, he has definatly put the faith back into storytelling on the big screen

They will normally release in November/Early December to get some Christmas sales when released at this time of the summer.

Be interested to know how you "put the faith" back into storytelling, is that a good or a bad thing ?

I wouldn't be surprised if the Batman film came out in October. Looking forward to the blu ray and hope the IMAX stuff is back in just like with TDK. I will then do a complete trilogy viewing.

I remember it taking years for a VHS to come out after the cinema. Disney titles were pretty bad and also the Star Wars films took ages. The first SW film took 5 years until 1982 and that was the rental. Empire was not out until 1984 and Jedi, 1986. I remember watching a re-release of Jedi around 1985 at the cinema after watching the the other two on VHS rental.

I think we are lucky now with a release can take just 3 months to come out. Obviously no one would accept the long waiting from the past now.

Don't get too excited, Nolan's an exception to the usual mindless crap hollywood have in the pipeline.

I don't think I've seen a Nolan film I haven't enjoyed. The Prestige a particular favourite.

I agree, had a look on IMDB earlier to see what other films he's directed, all great that I've seen (not seen his early short film)

I have a feeling that The Dark Knight came out in December, following the summer cinema release.

[Edit] - Film released July 24th & Blu Ray released 8th December (both UK).

Being such an old git, I remember when there was no such thing as VHS and you had to wait years for films to even show up on tv

Just been looking on a site that has Blu Ray release dates listed, and it says that December 7th is the release date for The Dark Knight Rises,

I wonder when they'll actually release all 3 as a boxset (even though I already have the first 2) well worth another dip into my pocket

I think 4 months from theatrical release seems to be the norm now, at least that is holding true for Avengers and Prometheus but it also depends on the country as we had PotC4 and Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows months before the US.

Just been in HMV today in metro centre, in the Blu Ray section it has a board just after The Dark Knight Blu Ray saying 'Pre-order now, release date 3rd December 2012'
