What foreign film are you watching tonight? - Part 3!

Had Le Boucher(1970) on my planner for a while now, recorded it off BBC4 a few months back. Gave it a watch earlier, thought it was a fairly good watch, but pretty forgettable for me.

Don't venture in here very often but quite glad I did now having seen the posts about Anything for Her.

Honestly, I don't think i'd have bothered tracking the film down if Diane Kruger wasn't mentioned

but glad I did anyway.

Really good performances. Enjoyed it muchly

On a roll with the Foreign films at the moment.

That's the 8th this month (Rec 2, Irreversable, Millenium Trilogy, Martrys, and Cold Prey 2 the others) and not one dud between then.

black books

really powerful and another epic struggle tale set in WWII.

great performances all round, nice pace and structure but just lacked the x factor for a 5 star rating

4 stars from me!

Just a heads up for whoever may be interested, Dogtooth is on film4 tomorrow night at 10.45. Read about this in these threads before, so will either record this or give it a watch if I get time.

Also noticed The Chaser is on bbc4 Sunday night at 10.30pm. Korean serial killer film looks well worth a watch, has anybody seen it?

Yes its excellent one of the best Korean thrillers out there

I concur with Systemsdead its a cracking film. Not to be missed.

Is this out on Blu yet?

I've just had a quick look around and it looks like the only blu-ray release so far is French with only French subtitles.

Just watched The Diving Bell and the Butterfly(2007), another brilliant French film based on the book. A pretty sad watch, but at the same time incredible to see the resolve of human spirit. To be suffering from 'locked-in syndrome' but still having the drive and will to be able to produce a best selling book through eye movement alone is pretty humbling.

Yeah life affirming. I read the book just after watching it. It's amazing to think what that man achieved after going through so much

I'll definitely be giving the book a read at some point now too. Although I always say this after watching films based on books, I just never seem to find the time to read the books in the end - need to make the time I reckon.

Watched the Carice van Houten starring Dutch film Alles Is Liefde at the weekend. Very timely for this time of year as it's set in the run up to Sinterklaas Day Eve, which is December 5th and the day that Dutch children get their presents.
Basically, it's a Dutch version of Love Actually. A romantic comedy-drama where a few separate love story plotlines come together at the end. It's nothing ground-breaking but quite heartwarming and Amsterdam has never looked more beautiful on film.

seriously !

so good seeing oldboy back on screen again - great film - great interplay between the leads , some great work by the support, although some weak areas in the script but overall great film ... but be warned its violent and was banned from public cinemas in korea for a while FOR A REASON!

although it looks like this films now been picked up by a US distributor so we may see it in cinemas

the one thing that does bother me a little is this film is pretty much easy game for the two leads as its the revenge genre in which both actors have had huge success in the past.

Finally took the time to watch this tonight, glad I did! I loved it, the darkest thriller I've seen in a while. I'd lost faith a bit with Korean films, the last few I've seen (Mr Vengeance, Lady Vengeance, Thirst, and what I could manage of Mother) have all not really done it for me.....but this is a straight up classic serial killer thriller. A bit gut wrenching in places and that took me by surprise a bit because I was expecting it to take a different route. Agree totally with systemsdead and Dellboy, this is brilliant.

ps. Need to give 'Mother' another go at some point, I got about 30 minutes into the blu-ray a while ago and turned it off. But the reviews rave about it so I want to revisit it in full.

pps. This threads been so quiet of late, I had to scroll to page 5 of the forum to find it!

its a shame you didnt like the mentioned films, i really liked mr vengeance!

however, if you like chaser, i think yo ushould try out 'memories of murder' and 'a dirty carnival'. oh, and theres a new one called 'i saw the devil' - hope its good, i like the director but really like the actor, Byung-hun Lee

i personally think korean films have been blossoming the past few years/near decade and i persaonlly prefer them to japanese as of late.

you should also try out:

im a cyborg but thats ok (real random but charming semi dark comedy)
JSA (joint security area) (nice film about friendship in an obscure situation)
bitter sweet life (gangster falls in love film)
good bad and weird (fun light hearted adventure film)

I quite liked Lady Vengeance in the end actually but took me a while to get into it. Mr Vengeance and Thirst just felt like hard work for me, and I think I just put Mother on at the wrong time so will definitely watch that in full again.

Have seen The Good, The Bad and The Weird and enjoyed that. Been meaning to see Memories of Murder for a while and haven't seen any of the others you mention so will check them out at some point.

ooh, havent seen that one either! you should take it easy on yourself, was only out not even a yr ago!

might have to try and get a cheap-ish copy somewhere, the problem with world cinema is, is that i cant afford spending the extra it costs as its not that popular here. ande once you buy many, it all mounts up to a new credit card
