"Chick Flicks"

I am curious as to where this term comes from myself, I am male and tbh I like the majority of the films people refer to as "Chick Flicks" just as much as I do any other film.

Also this year I have already bookmarked some films that have peeked my interest and they are the ones below.

Beastly
Cats and Dogs: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore
Cop Out
Date Night
Daybreakers
Dear John
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Dinner for Schmucks
Due Date
Extroardinary Measures
From Paris With Love
Hot Tub Time Machine
Iron Man 2
Killers
Knight and Day
Leap Year
Legion
Letters To Juliet
Our Family Wedding
Repo Man
Resident Evil: Afterlife (REALLY hoping its not gonna be as bad as extinction)
Salt
She's Out of My League
Shrek Forever After
Takers
The Back-up Plan
The Bounty Hunter
The Crazies
The Last Airbender
The Last Song
The Losers
The Other Guys
The Spy Next Door
The Wolfman
Tooth Fairy
Toy Story 3
When in Rome

Sorry for the long list but they are what seem to me like good watches so far that some might have missed.

Whats everyone else keeping track of this year ?

No Valentines day? that's surly this years quintessential chick flick? Amazing cast list too.

Lots of films I'm looking forward to this year though not many are chick flicks there is a huge varity of genres that are represented.

Off the top of my head this year I'll be watching.

Valentines Day
Alice in Wonderland
Percy Jackson the lightning theif.
Clash of the Titans
How to train your dragon
Iron Man 2
Robin hood
Shrek forever after
The A Team
The Karate Kid
Toy Story 3
Harry Potter
Tron Legacy

I'll probably watch a fair few chick flicks over the year though, things like when in Rome. I nearly always enjoy them but wouldn't chose to sit down and watch one if it wasn't for my wife. I loved Love Actually though and am embarassingly pretty partial to Music and Lyrics.

Not to sound obvious but I believe that term came from, as it basically means, films(flicks) for women(chicks)... Or perhaps more accurately films for young women.

The targeted audience of chick flicks is definitely aimed at the female audience, that is not to say you will not enjoy them too but personally if I have a choice I tend To avoid such films .

Romantic Comedy is probably a better term and while the primary demographic is women they still try to appeal to men too. Over the last few years Rom coms have really tried to appeal to men and quite a few of them probably concider men to be the primary demographic like Zack and Miri make a Porno, knocked up, 40 year old virgin and I think I'd even call the hangover a rom com.

Things don't really need to be pigeon holed though. Most adults enjoy pixars and dreamworks films and while the primary demographic for them is children it's very clear that further depth, humor and character development is added with adults in mind.

Personally I enjoy rom coms for the most part but don't enjoy romantic, sad, soppy dramas, those really do have less for men (well me at least).

I think most of these Chick flicks are covered if someone watches anything with Julia Roberts or Hugh Grant. I can't stand either of them.

That's one of my favourite 'chick flicks' too. Funny, heartwarming, great cheesy music. love it.

I learned years ago with Pamela Anderson films just cause you fancy the lead actress doesn't make them worth watching....it just lessens the boredom.

rom coms, chick flicks same difference to me ...I'll avoid if I have a choice and watch if and only if it's with female company. they're 97% awful.

not seen any of those they don't appeal tbh. might see on TV but those sort of comedys rarely satisfy me I gave up on them.

Oh my God...

Just stoppit, all this pandering to chick flicks, it's just wrong, why it's almost like a big womens-movie-love-in-athon...

we're blokes, we shouldn't be watching that kind of stuff... well except for the women, they can watch them I suppose... and if we do watch them, it's supposed to be under duress and we're supposed to tut and moan about how crap they are all the way through the film...

bunch of big jessies !!!!

"Chick flick" is an appropriation of the term "chick lit" which started to come into use in the late 80s and referred novels aimed at 20 to 30something women. Famous chick lit that became chick flicks are The Brigit Jones Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada

Damn straight. I've seen 'He's Just Not That Into You' twice, because it's got some cracking talent in it. Especially Scarlett Johanssen.
