Hi,

Not going to see it. Not going to pay to see it. The fact that this is a film that is promoted as being...

"From the toy company that bought you TRANSFORMERS"

... says it all!

Another pile of braindead Hollywood pap, aimed at the Tween-generation, with no plot, endless CGI explosions and noise, and the acting talents of Rhianna! Yep, another High Quality piece of celluloid!

What next? YAHTZEE, THE MOVIE!

Just seen this and it was exactly what I expected: loud, over-the-top, mindless, aliens, explosions, American, and a pop star. It certainly didn't falsely advertise.

Just watched it, loved it.

This isn't directed at anyone but I never understand why threads on films of this ilk descend into "there's no plot", "the characters are bad"... it's not Citizen Kane and it's not claiming to be.

Is this film pap? Possibly, it is entertaining? Most certainly.

On a side note, this is destined to become the next reference disc for blu-ray. The AQ was just amazing.

Though I agree, surely it's the point of the trailer to make you think, wow gotta see that film !

I (and others) saw the trailer & said no thanks !

Yes the trailer AND storyline drew me in, i loved it. Its just the way people seem to word things. To me all you can tell from a trailer is whether you want to go and see a film or not. Its not a long enough clip to bring a judgement that the entire film is crap, surely?

I am bias anyway because i loved it, but i try and keep an open mind regarding different genres, directors and actors. I wont dismiss a film totally because its made by a certain company/person and they've knocked out 1 or 2 poor films. Same applies for actors, granted i may not rush to the cinema but i will certainly pick up or rent. Being closed minded may result in missing out on good movies.

When viewing films we are not always looking for a mind blowing, thought provoking, masterpiece, are we?

I kinda agree, but I think we're often let down these days by poor trailers. Drive, for me, would be a good recent example. I watched the film before I saw the trailer, and I'm glad I did.

Anyway, Battleship. A lot of fun.

Well, this isn't the first time that that's happened, and it won't be the last. It happens all of the time. It's called "first impressions".

True, but I want to be entertained without being told "America's a great country, with an amazing army, and aren't we just the best people in the world", which is what a film like this or INDEPENDENCE DAY or even AVATAR seem to do, for two hours plus!

Look, if people want to enjoy Hollywood pap, that's fine. I just prefer my pap, to be a little more than a grandiose promotional film for "America, The Great Nation"! You can make a decent, mindless film, without being utterly patronising to your audience. Most of the Hollywood blockbusters that are being churned out, are ones that are incredibly patronising to their audience, and treat them like a 2-year old.

It's my view, and people are free to disagree with me - that's fine - but it's a view I stand by. I'd much rather corrode my brain on something a little more fun, than the likes of this. Give me a John Waters or Ed Wood film, any day of the week, over junk like BATTLESHIP.

Isn't quite the opposite true and shows them to be morally bankrupt

Very gracious of you there Pooch I think what some of the others are getting at is that the trailer isn't sufficient to draw anything but superficial conclusions. It's one thing to see the film and decide it's not enjoyable, but until then you're not really in a position to know how much 'fun' it is either way. I thought the trailer looked dumb as all hell, but I saw it and enjoyed it very much.

I respect everyone has the right to an opinion, no problem. My original point was a person slagging off a movie they have not seen, based on a 2-3 minute trailer. As said somewhere above, not all trailers do a film justice, shall we just start reviewing trailers now and not bother with the entire film?

Checked this out on Yesterday, not to bad a film being in the navy and knowing how the Yanks work it was a typical hollywood way over the top film

How that blonde guy was acting is how most of the Yank navy would act in this situation, Rihanna actually surprised me! and she had a lot more screen time than i thought she would

it had Transformers written all over it as well, those Cog Ball things just reminded me of transformers.

Over all, a nice film loads of action explosions and military over the top USA is the best, it kept me entertained and had me laughing in places. Id love to do this when im at sea! those aliens wouldn't be **** against us and our fatty Navy!

Highlight of the film for me being a huge Generation Kill fan was the - STAY FROSTY - Quote by Alexander Skarsgård

Would you have seen Resident Evil based on this trailer.

This for me has been more appealing than ones I have seen for other films and yet Resident Evil is one film that should be annihilated from existance and any trace that it existed be wiped from this planet.

Trailers are just basically the short descriptions you see in books in movie format and some just dont do the film justice whilst others basically show you every decent bit in a film.

I have not seen a trailer thats made me think its worth risking £10 to go see, when it was under £5 per film I used to go nearly every week to films that peeked my interest. Now I preview before I risk my £10.

I wasn't that keen on seeing this but I saw a Film 4 promo for it yesterday. I most definitely don't want to see it now. It looks terrible and Rihanna's rambling put the final nail in the coffin for me.

woah there pooch, lets not be rash. as much as i agree with your rant on the OTT american patriotism and that battleship looks "not to my taste " but lets not ridicule independence day for the expense of this conversation

As much as i hate that many hollywood (mainly blockbusters) slap stars and stripes all over the screen, it is done to make money as for that type of film, it is aimed at that type of audience. And to be honest and not to be controversial, *slightly sweating* a good part of the american culture is contained within their patriotic themes (optimism, bravery, friendship etc - thats from personal experience whenever i go over to the states). Same could be said about many films made in china and a final tbh, some films made here in UK.

Vice versa, if they never made films like them, people could criticise they aren't being true to their nature. Plus we would have never got great popcorn films like Independence Day, TopGun, Airforce One, Saving Ryan's privates and many more

I expected this to be big, loud, dumb and stupid so I can't complain. But really. Could they not have left out Rihanna, put in just a little (tiny) bit of story and it made it soooooo much better.

Does anyone think the alien suits look very similar to the Isaacs one from the video game Dead Space?

Saw this today ! Enjoyed it, the land based stuff was a bit of a bore but everything else was great, mindless fun. Worth seeing on the big screen for the excellent sound and visual effects alone.

Got round to finally seeing this today.

The sci fi concept is hilariously benign. The amount of scientific implausibilities in this film was so astronomical, Prof Hawkins would have a serious heart attack if he saw this film, even if he was told its a comedy. Thankfully the implausibilities starts right off the bat, so that prepared me for some kind of spoof comedy. Still, throughout the film, I found myself smacking my forehead in disbelief so hard, I nearly knocked myself out. This film is stupid. If I had not known Michael Bay had nothing to do with this, I would have thought he directed it. Whoever is the director must have made this film as some kind homage to Bay's lunacy.

And for all that, I actually enjoyed it. The beginning was actually the most fun, I was laughing out loud as there was some good comedy here as star boy tries to impress girl with hilariously determination. The film's first hour was almost similar to Armageddon. I.e Boy gets girl, boy works under girl's father's command, father not impressed with boy as boy wants his blessing to marry his daughter. Same burger, different different condiments. Then the film shifts into gear 5 with an hour of pure destruction, war and full fat cheese. It got very tiresome during the middle because it was all being taken so seriously, so I was bored. The typical gung ho soundtrack was grating on me too. The landmark destructions were a bit numbing. But then the final act brought back the patriotic cheese and fun.

6/10 Nonsensical cheesy stupid fun.

There are numerous dumb sci fi implausibilities in this film but the very beginning had me in fits. So they found an Earthlike planet and sent a signal to it, from which they received a response within 4-5 years. Now it takes light at least 4 years to just reach our nearest neighbouring star? And then I cracked up at their concept of using relays to accelerate the signal, lol. Man, it would have had more credibility if they used Voyager 1 as an Alien rendezvous. Maybe this whole film is a naked gun style spoof of Michael Bay films? As Patrick Moore would say, I wonder?

Watched this tonight. Totally over the top but very enjoyable. Great entertainment. Yeah the alien suits do look like Issac's suit from Dead Space.

So you missed the start and you were drunk, I'm not sure that puts you in the best position to judge.
