Most of the early reviews appear to be slating this and saying it is garbage ... oh dear sounds like it could be another monumental waste of cash and mega flop, not to mention wasted opportunity !

To be honest, reading through the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, I think they are exactly as I expected. A movie like this is always going to have it's detractors, it's just a popcorn movie and probably does exactly what it says on the packet.

It's a bit odd how this is being released in the US five weeks later than Europe becasue judging by what I've read it sounds like a load of cheesy american balls with the US navy saving the world from destruction and not the sort of movie that's going to be getting great reviews over here. Apparently the navy was involved a fair bit in the films production.

There is an extra clip at the end of the film and no one knew about it so they all left, most people seemed to enjoy it though after having spoken to a few.

I wanted to like it as the early screen shots and trailer looked pretty cool, but not gonna pay to watch this at the cinema now, will wait to catch it on Sky movies.

I saw it last night and enjoyed the crap out of it. Sure, it's dumb, loud, flag-waving nonsense, but it was really entertaining. The effects are pretty cool, the sound mix relentless, and the AC/DC music really got me in the mood. Sure there were sections where I was literally laughing at the absurdity of the on-screen events, but I was laughing with it, not at it. It's the best bad film I've seen in ages and I'll probably go and see it again. It was like a Transformers film without all of the terrible things that Bay injects.

I figured that there would be something after the credits, but I was practically thrown out by the cleaners at the end so I missed it. They had big 'we are monitoring this screening for piracy' posters up everywhere as well. However, they had a better way of defeating piracy, by playing the wrong film. Had to sit through 10 minutes of Wrath of the Titans in 3D (without glasses) even though I told them it was the wrong film after the first 30 seconds. Monkeys...

Caught the trailer for this a couple of weeks ago

Looks like a pile of crap to me, the "special effects" remind me of the transformers movies.

Not my cup of tea at all

Seems a shame people are slating the film without seeing it. It was the trailers and storyline that drew me to go and see it. I never take notice of critics reviews either, i like to find out for myself and then make my own mind up. In general even if a film is good or bad i never think of cinema going as a waste of money, £6.50 it cost to see Battleship worth every penny for me. Some people waste the same amount on a packet of cigarette's everyday. And just to add Rihannas' part in the film didnt add or take anything away from the film, she certainly didnt annoy me or spoil it.

The question is does it have a plot and interesting characters or is it just a load of CGI, explosions, shaky camera work and loud music all the time ?

The trailer suggests that's all it has to offer and that's not enough for me.

Ok. Empire hated it. I love Empire though they've got several wrong recently. . .they praised the final harry potter (sell outs), and they gave Chronicle a 4 (bewildered!). . .this got a 2.

I'm back from it - and I LOVED IT! Seriously. I'm sure everyone is bored of comparisons to transformers - but it feels like the same universe.

The sound design is GREAT.
There are funny parts that everyone laughed at.
It's a great action movie, with touches of comedy, and great visual effects. It's a great way to spend and evening.

No shaky camera at all.

The plot: Humans establish contact via an alien planet using new satellite technology. They hope for friendly contact even though some say it won't happen. They get invaded by this alien race of nearly-human-looking folk. All this invasion occurs at Sea. The race essentially wants to make contact with their planet using said satellite technology and its up to the humans (small in number due to the way things pan out - pretty much 3 ships) to stop this by trying to destroy the alien's at sea - and stopping those that have reached land from using the satellites.

That's my short synopsis without spoiling anything.

It sounded great - it really did.

Yeah me too, with all the hype and mega budget, I think we were all hoping this would be a quality action film with awesome effects

That said, some of the above reviews from fellow AVF Guys do give me some hope again now that perhpas it may be worth a punt after all

For people who have seen the film can you answer this.....is there any reason why the aliens couldn't just attack the ship from underwater and destroy it in seconds?

The alien ships never fired underwater. Their weapons needed to be above water in order to fire.

Near the end the big ship actually has to raise itself even further out of the water to open and fire it's extra missiles so I think the missiles only function above water

Also; there are points in the movie where the big alien ships could have simply destroyed the human ships with ease by just blowing them up - the problem is that the alien folk didn't attack ships that weren't attacking them. So when the humans sussed this out they basically had infinite time to find another way to defeat them! So basically humans always had first shot with a ship as only an attack would engage a response.

Ok, but what about the large robot things from the trailers, could they not attack from underwater?

No. Every weapon is fired outside water. They just use water to land and float on. When they need to fire they rise up the gun bits above water

I was actually being sarcastic.

I hate all film critics and if this film had received good reviews, I probably would have hated it.

This is probably 2 hours of things blowing up, much like Transformers. Popcorn movies are great when done well and am looking forward to seeing it.

I loved this film, popcorn, cheese fest at it's best, loud, good CGI and lots of explosions it's what cinema was made for, miles better than Transformers, didn't stay until after the credits

You are sooo wrong
This film is the perfect film to start of the summer film fest. There is nothing wrong with this film apart from a lack of screen time for Liam Neeson.

I look forward to the sequel!

I feel bad for Neeson. Not for being in this film, but for the fact that the poor bloke seems to be throwing himself into any role he's offered just to keep busy. Understandable of course, but he's becoming a bit of a Sigourney Weaver. I'm sure he'll start turning up in the back of limos wielding dual pistols before long...

Glad there's some love for this film though. I can be as snobby as the best of them, but if I can go all American for a second, I had an 'absolute blast' with this film. 'Thunder! Ahahahahahah!'
