Anyone heard of Gekkodvd suppliers?

I'm trying to buy a copy of Beauty and the beast on DVD but i don't really want to pay 50 quid for it off of e-bay/Amazon. I've found a uk website called Gekkodvd that is advertising it for 14.99! Does anyone use this site & is reputable? Many thanks.

Re: Anyone heard of Gekkodvd suppliers?

Funny you should ask - I was about to order some other Disney DVDs, but was concerned to find no contact details whatsover, no address, no telephone number, just an email address. So I emailed them asking for these, and pointing out that I thought that by law they should display these. I said that if I at least knew where they were based, I'd probably order from them. My email was polite - after all, it's not unreasonable to want to know who you are sending your money to.
4 days later, I got this reply:

"Hi Paul,
You are actually quite confused, there are no such laws pertaining to the use of a .co.uk domain, and company details need only be provided by Limited Companies.
If you wish to find our registered address then simply use whois and perform a search.
Regards
Gekko DVD"

You be the judge of whether you want to order anything from this company, and whether this amounts to the excellent customer service they claim...

Anyway, I checked WHOIS, and it suggests they are in Arizona. I won't touch them with a barge pole, I'd rather buy a used copy from Ebay UK. Not because they are in the US, but because they seek to hide the fact.

Re: Anyone heard of Gekkodvd suppliers?

someone else said they were registered in the UK, but still no business address; so It looks like I was wrong about Arizona; I must have checked .com instead by mistake. So I checked .uk and it says it is registered to a non-trading individual in the UK since 2nd Nov this year 2007.
No address details.

Unhappy Re: Anyone heard of Gekkodvd suppliers?

Ordered 5 DVD's from them in Dec for UK use, arrived fairly quickly from Thailand but Xmas recipients found they were for Region 1 despite my order confirming they were for UK/Europe. As yet no reply to my 2 e-mails requesting replacements and return instructions even though I have complied with their request to be polite. Is this their "Excellent Customer service"?

Re: Anyone heard of Gekkodvd suppliers?

i got 3 dvds from them 2 days ago, don't trust them, one doesn't even work, another was created on the day i ordered the item, i mean the data on the disc was created on that day! i emailed them saying these are fake i want a refund, this was their reply...

-------All the movies are "Fully Licensed Imports" as described on the website. As Imports thay may differ from UK stock however this does not deem them to be fakes as you have described.

I am somewhat confused by your statement regarding a date that a movie was created?------

blah blah blah! £33 for 3 dvds which are fake, one doesn't even work... i don't think so! i emailed them back with a detailed explanation to why the dvds are fake and that i just want a refund.

not to be trusted!!

I think these guys sell through ebay quite alot, be wary of them as many products are not what they say in print. I think they are based offshore (Cayman Islands) i think.

Your 14.99 Beauty and the Beast will be a knock off from Hong Kong or thailand, it will work but won't be a true Disney DVD (with nice hologram) best off biting the bullett and paying ebay prices like i did for the special edition. Otherwise wait 5-10 year for the next commemorative release.

Good luck with the refund, but don't hold your breath - if you paid by Paypal which when I looked seemed to be the only way, you may be able to initiate a chargeback stating reason as counterfeit goods.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience; it's a case of shutting the door after the horse has bolted, because even a cursory look at some of the forums where this company have been discussed since November last year will reveal all you needed to know about them. We all have a tendency to automatically trust companies unconditionally, especially when websites look good and prices look even better.

Not trying to say it's your own fault, as I too very nearly ordered from them last year, until sanity prevailed and I decided to ask them who I was dealing with - the ensuing response told me all I needed to know about this outfit.
You have probably already checked these forums since your unfortunate experience ?

nobody has anything good to say about this bunch. I would recommmend you also post your experience on those boards so as many people as possible get to read about it.
