well the topic says most of it? what is the diffrence between canadian r1's and american r1's?

canadian dvds sometimes have french writing on the covers its all dependant on the film studio releaseing the dvd.

The consequence this has on most Canadian retailers is that the covers we have for certain American movies are not the same as those found with American retailers.

1) As it stands, the types of covers that are available from major studios are:
2 distinct products, one with an English cover and one with a French cover.

2) 1 product with a reversible bilingual cover (one side predominently French and one side predominently English, but both sides bilingual)

3) 1 product with a non reversible bilingual cover (predominently English but bilingual)

4) 1 product with a reversible cover (one side completely French and one side completely English expect for a small tag stating that the reverse cover is in French)

The major studios have adopted the following methods as of March 1st 2002:
Columbia, Warner, Seville, Fox and Disney use method 1
Universal use method 2
Paramount use method 3
Fox use option 4

As above, it's just in the cover plus the french langauage options are usually more comprehensive.

There are other rare differences (emphasis on the RARE) - Take Alone in the Dark DVD - US has a DTS soundtrack but the Canadian version doesn't (having a French DD 5.1) - but as the film is poor, would you get it anyway

Always worth keeping one eye open for.

that's good...I have both but the advertisers always seem to make a big thang about there being no french text on the cover.....I personally couldn't care either way

imo it's not excitment it is just a personal preferance if you can wait a month or so after the title has been released, you can get R1 USA DVD's the same price as the canadian counterpart or cheaper if you wait, but it is after all personal preferance.

ok thanks, as ive seen friday 13th boxset for about £33 and its canadian r1 and the cheapest american r1 iv found is £42 which is from cdwow i think

Only die-hard DVD fetishist hates the French bilingual cover. They get high fever, body rash and lies swimming in sweat evry night if they have a bilingual DVD cover standing on their shelf.

Like me, I take the lowest priced DVD at any time regardless of bilingual cover or not.
