Looks like Peter Jackson will be using a similar release structure to the Lord of the Rings trilogy
Warner Bros. are celebrating their 90th anniversary in 2013 and whilst we’re not sure that’s a milestone normally regarded as a cause for celebration, we assume that unlike Universal they couldn't wait until they reached the magic 100! Anyway buried in yesterday’s press release relating to Warner Bros. slate of anniversary Blu-ray releases was an interesting tidbit regarding
The Hobbit - “And finally among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’
Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition.”
So it would seem that Peter Jackson will be following the same release strategy he used for
Lord of the Rings, which is fair enough - if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We can therefore assume that after
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in December we will see a Blu-ray release of the theatrical cut in the spring and an extended cut in November to help promote the December 2013 release of
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
