James Cameron confirms Avatar 4

Landau might be surprised

Talk about planning ahead but not only has James Cameron confirmed there is to be a fourth instalment in the Avatar Series but also that it will be a prequel. The news may come as a surprise for some, including Producer John Landau who, only last week, said there was little chance of an Avatar 4.

In an interview with MTV Cameron said, " I have an idea for a fourth, I haven’t really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na’vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world."

“In the first film, we’re dropping into a process that’s 35 years in to a whole colonisation," he continued. "That will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we’ll start, not imitating Star Wars, but it’s a logical thing to do because we’ll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three."

"The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films. It’s a plan.”

I hate prequels. A prequel is just for someone who has no new ideas so wants to go back over old ground with a different character.

To succeed you need to keep going forward even with new characters.

We really dont need to know or care care what the first settlers thought about big blue cats. They probably went to stroke one and got an arrow up the backside.

We discussed prequels in a recent Movies podcast and we basically decided they were a waste of time as we struggled to think of any worthwhile prequels.
