Prometheus to be released on 2D and 3D Blu-ray in October

Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel bursts onto Blu-ray

Almost as soon as Prometheus, Sir Ridley Scott’s long awaited prequel to Alien, made its way on to our cinema screens, fans were wondering when the film would be released on disc and whether it would include any additional footage. Scott has a history of releasing longer versions of his films on Blu-ray and given its rather rushed final reel, Prometheus seemed a perfect subject for the extended treatment. A viral video released just after the film’s theatrical run included the mysterious number 10.11.12 and many thought this might be the date for the disc launch.

Well with Amazon.com and other retailers in the US taking orders for a release date of the 11th of October 2012 (which ties in with the US habit of putting the month first when writing dates), it would seem the viral video was correct. The 11th of October is actually a Thursday which is unusual as most US discs are released on a Tuesday but the good news is that it looks like we’ll be getting Prometheus a few days earlier here in the UK. Amazon.co.uk and other retailers have Prometheus on pre-order for the 8th of October, which matches the usual Monday release date for discs on this side of the pond.

So far there has been no official announcement from 20th Century Fox but if Amazon are taking orders for early October then something must be imminent. The box art shown above is only temporary but since the film was shot natively in 3D it will definitely be released in both 2D and 3D versions. No further details have been released yet but based on Scott’s previous Blu-ray releases, we can expect a commentary track, a detailed making of documentary and hopefully an extended cut or at least some deleted scenes.

That's certainly NOT my experience with the UK 3D release -- is it the same disc as the US release? (My disc number is WW 52503)

In 3D on the X30 I find it unwatchable where there is any rapid lateral motion. On pausing the film there is clearly something wrong -- one eye's field looks to be about a frame ahead of the other, or that's how it looks. I don't just mean a spatial difference (which you'd obviously expect for a movie in 3D), but a temporal one.

For instance, in the waterfall scene at the beginning, parts of the flowing water seem to jump forwards and backwards randomly as each eye's version of the picture happens to match or not to match.

I have about a dozen 3D blurays and none of them does anything like this -- they all look great on the X30 (with the bundled JVC 3D glasses) and a Pioneer BDP-LX55.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is there something wrong at my end?

Well when I watched Prometheus on my X3, the 3D was fantastic but my disc is the US version.

I have the uk release and there is nothing like what you have mentioned and I wonder if you have a faulty disc ! I have watched it 3 times in 3d on the x30 .

Thanks -- maybe I do. I assumed you were watching the US 3D release as you reported on it so soon after it came out!

Update: I just tried a replacement disc and it's exactly the same problem, so I'm thinking it's my Bluray player (Pioneer BDP-LX55). Oh well.
