The Dark Knight Rises shatters IMAX Records

Easily overtakes previous record held by Avatar

The Dark Knight Rises, which makes its European premier tonight in Leicester Square last night has rung up over £1 million in pre-order ticket sales at London's BFI IMAX. That represents some 62,300 tickets for Christopher Nolan's entrant in to Batman series, grossing £1,001,300 two days before its opening tomorrow.

Tickets for the 'IMAX Experience' have been on sale for 5 weeks and the numbers have already eclipsed Avatar, which took £607,000 in sales from 47,000 tickets in 2009. 43 of the IMAX showings are sold out, including early screenings at 4.25am and 4.55am this weekend.

Dennis Laws of BFI IMAX said: "These figures prove that seeing The Dark Knight Rises in IMAX, to truly experience Christopher Nolan's incredible vision for the film, is an unmissable event this summer.

"People are even flying in from abroad especially to see the film at BFI IMAX. We want as many people as possible to be able to see it, so we're already adding extra shows to meet the demand."
