Rose-tinted specs eh?
... there must have been crap sitcoms alongside Bilko, just as there were or are with Taxi, Cheers, Frasier, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, The Big Bang Theory, etc ....

Yeah...steady. Bilko has weathered superbly certainly mainly because of Hiken's superb scripts tailored to Phil Silver's strengths. He certainly does not carry the series on its own but make no mistake he is the draw surrounded by a selection of charicatures however keenly observed and delivered by the likes of Henshaw (Allan Melvin), Barbella (Harvey Lembeck), Doberman (Maurice Gosfield) and of course Colonel Hall (Paul Ford).

For every Phil Silvers Show there were ten duds that didn't merit reruns.

I have owned the R1 set for a few years and watch an episode or two at random every few months. They really don't make them like that any more
