Star Trek 1-6 £44.99 + £3.95 shipping

F*** me, just watched Star Trek 2009 and absolutely loved it. Gave it 10/10 at the IMDb. Wonderful film and very respectful to my memory. Never seen any of the new stuff with that head slapper or the guy with a beard -which all looks like tat. I was waiting for a Star Trek: On Ice -Live! cash in.

I've only ever seen the original TV (Shatner) and Star Trek 1-5 (all in the same night/morning in the Edinburgh Odeon! -We couldn't leave until they ALL finished either because we had to get the first bus home ). I quite fancy the Bluray of 1-6 to reassess and reintroduce myself. I then see there's a 3 pack due out of the adjusted cuts so now my head's well spinning. What are fans and the not so fanatic going for or went for? There's an even bigger box set next moth but I've no interest in the newer movies except the brand new Chris Pine one.

DVDWorldUSA are doing 1-6 for £44.99 + £3.95 which looks very respectable having had a quick price check aorund the place. Is it?

Thank you for your thoughts, live long and prosper!

Re: Star Trek 1-6 £44.99 + £3.95 shipping

New Trek doesn't do it for me. May look stunning, but it pisses all over Trek history and presses the massive big red reset button. Old Trek is dead now (thanks to Enterprise) and new Trek is just too 90210 for my liking.

But anyway, as for the old, problem is as I understand it, Star Trek: TMP is presented in the rather dull theatrical version and not the much superior Directors Cut (which contains a rare example of how to do CGI enhancements correctly so they don't look out of place and actually improve the film - take note Mr. Lucas ). Likewise Star Trek II is also not the Directors Cut although in this case the extra scenes in the DC are not all that great, but I've been used to them from old showings on TV of the extended version.

I'm not sure but Star Trek VI might also just be the theatrical version which is a shame as the DC has a couple of extended scenes which are worth it.

So, I'll be waiting for the extra special editions with all this restored, much like how I waited years and years for the SEs on DVD knowing full well they'd do them.

Now I know that Star Trek: TMP's CGI effects were apparently mastered in standard def so that's a problem, but with enough demand (or potential to make money) they can redo them. Sadly Robert Wise is no longer with us though and it was his involvement in the DC that really got it off the ground and so lovingly made. Given Blu-Ray sale potential is tiny compared to DVD also, there is less incentive.

Re: Star Trek 1-6 £44.99 + £3.95 shipping

Very interesting, thanks

I'll hold off on the 6 boxset as it has £39.99 written all over it. Remember I've not seen any Star Trek merchandise since 1987-8 (through the night marathon 4 or 5 films in a row) so when I sat down to watch ST2009 things were pretty fresh to me and there was also a lot of fresh faces (except that Eric Banana bloke).

Dunno, I just thought the film was warm and full of likeable characters. I have absolutely no Star Trek TV baggage and knew nothing about the production and I have absolutely no idea about ST6-10 (and I mean NO idea). Maybe that helped. Definite 10/10 for me and right up there with Watchmen. I think there's 30mins of footage for ST2009 I'd like to see added. The film was a BIG film from the outset and deserves more oxygen.

One thing which I did like was the video below. That's one of the coolest things I've seen on YouTube.

His face tells a million stories

Very much. It was squarely aimed at a fresh audience and those who knew Star Trek but aren't really fans and probably haven't seen many of the films if any. That's why it's such a hit. It's accessible to a wider audience even if it's at the cost of their traditional fan base. Bums on seats after all
