Re: £7.99 HMV Exclusives

Avoid the Switchblade Romance blu ray. It's sorely lacking in HD picture quality and there are no extras ported over from the sd-dvd. A real let down.

Thanks, tis a damn fine film

People have mentioned 1080i and I don't know how they know that (technically) and would like to know. Some reviewers mention it and some don't. I discount DVDBeaver slightly as I think he sometimes smokes crack-cocaine wrapped in old Criterion DVD sleeves. I'd really like to know how the figure it's i and not p (and I don't want 2nd hand rumoured to be info -tell me how I can do it on my setup (PC and standalone). Those Bluray grabs look beautiful.

Re: £7.99 HMV Exclusives

It makes me laugh the way everyone now talks about 1080i like it's a dirty word.

A 1080i transfer is excellent and unless it's on a huge projected screen (and you're looking for it) you won't even notice the difference.

Re: £7.99 HMV Exclusives

I think a better example is:

www.thx.com/interlaced

That's certainly a massive difference and I will be writing to my MP. And I might just add that I checked my MP's expenses online -I'm not suggesting anything untoward- and he claimed £145 for toilet roll for the year.

That's one helluva lot of sh**.

Re: £7.99 HMV Exclusives

Isn't the European Pan's Labyrinth release regarded as the best picture quality though? - I recall trying to decide on HDDVD or BR for this one, and I believe the European release was more true to the original picture-wise?

____
I'd also add that the region A Pan's Labyrinth has better audio and is region free.

The Reg A Pan's is heavily DNR'd, The UK release is far superior PQ wise.

I've watched them both side by side and there's not a massive difference in PQ. I'd rather have a slightly less filmic image for much better audio but each to their own. I owned the UK version for a while and had watched it a few times before finding out about the US version. I much prefer the US version. Good price though.

Re: £7.99 HMV Exclusives

Well I've gone and ordered Switchblade Romance (horrible title, much prefer Haute Tension) because I didn't already have the DVD and the extras don't matter to me, so for a first dip I'll take the marginal picture improvement of the BD, although 'marginal improvement' are two words that shouldn't have to be used in describing a newly mastered HD title.

I've also taken a chance with Elephant, a haunting and criminally neglected masterpiece. I've not managed to find any feedback on the disc, which is already released in the non HMV exclusive version. Anyone know if this is 1080p or not, and how the a/v rates?

Re: £7.99 HMV Exclusives

Hi All

Received my disks today. Haven't watched any yet though

Just a word of warning. Brick is 1080i which has disappointed me. Pans Labyrinth has no HD soundtrack either (Less of an issue to me but still a little annoying)

PQ is good on This Is England, it's kind of like the Bronson transfer (i.e. quite grainy but detailed)

The audio track is DTS-MA.

interlaced is horrid on any screen size.

My setup converts the 1080i to 1080p/50 which then outputs at 720p/50 as that is the resolution of the projector. It looks just like any other 1080p BD but not at 24hz speed. I only ever had one instance of judder which was during Zack and Miri for a couple of seconds during a panning shot.

I’m no expert; but this doesn’t seem correct to me.

As I understand it; a fixed panel device cannot display an interlaced image.

It has to be deinterlaced i.e. the sets video processing circuitry will create a single progressive image from each even and odd field when fed an interlaced source.

So everytime you watch a 1080i disc on a plasma or LCD you are watching a progressive image.

What will vary from set to set is the quality of the deinterlacing. Some sets may do a good job others will not.

But to say the quality of the image from a 1080i disc is inferior to a 1080p is wrong – they should be identical if the 1080i disc is deinterlaced correctly.

Of course; choosing a 1080p disc eliminates any worry over your displays ability to deinterlace a 1080i source.

I’m happy to be corrected about this if I’m wrong!
