Motorola V8

Hi

The Motorola V8 has just arrived in the shops and is available on the net (but not the Motorola Shop). It's absolutely the phone for me, but there's just one snag - it comes in two versions, one with an inbuilt 420MB internal memory and one with a 2GB internal memory. No idea why they would want to do this, but worse I've just been to Carphone Warehouse where they put the shiny object in my hand but can't tell me whether its 420MB or 2GB. There's nothing on the box to say which it is. The details are probably in the handbook, but that's sealed! Aaaaarrgh!

Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks

Angry Re: Motorola V8

Guys

I've got some sort of answer - I phoned Motorola UK Customer Service who told me that all the handsets in the UK now are 512MB memory and the higher 2GB versions won't be available until September or October... and no, there is no way of telling without powering the phone up and checking "memory available" from the memory. As there is no facility for a
a Micro SD card, does this suck or what? Presumably Joe Public is going to buy this phone and then be really disappointed when they find out how limited a non expandable 512MB memory is.

It is quite possible that the Moto Customer Service people don't know what they're talking about and if anyone knows differently, I'd be grateful to hear from you.

Cheers!

Re: Motorola V8

Update - been in London this week so ventured into a few shops on Tottenham Court Road (as you do) and it's a fact - in the UK the Motorola V8 is currently only fitted with a 420MB internal memory (with no card slot for expansion) even though various websites quote 2GB. The word is that later phones will have the 2GB memory but as I suggested earlier the only way you can tell is to power it up and check the "available memory" via the menu.

I guess if you're not going to use the MP3 player (as this is probably the best thing on the V8 that doesn't seem likely does it?) and don't want to store a lot of photos, etc., 420MB might be OK. For me it's a deal-breaker. I love the my V3i and the V8 seemed to promise everything. I might wait to see when the 2GB versions arrive but this really hacks me off.

Hope this warning helps the unsuspecting buyer.

Re: Motorola V8

My understanding is that the V8 (GSM) has the 420MB internal memory, and the V9 and V9m (3G and EVDO CDMA respectively) have the MicroSD expansion slot on top of that. So in the UK, unless you are going 3G, you won't get the extra 2GB.

One thing that annoys me is it appears you can't change the phone's Bluetooth Name to something a little more personal than MOTORAZR V8 (which several people may have). Anyone know a way round this.

I'm delighted to see you can now lock the external buttons so it doesn't switch to silent mode whilst knocking about in your trouser pocket!

Re: Motorola V8

You can change the bluetooth name

Goto the BT screen select options with the left soft key

Select manage then Setup Bluetooth

Then Highlight My Device Name with the down button and then press the center select button and a text entry box will apear in which you can enter your new BT Name

Re: Motorola V8

Ah - wonderful. I could have sworn I tried that, but it works just as you describe. Thank you Cougar!

[EDIT: I just realised what I was doing wrong. The bluetooth needs to be powered on to allow you you to edit the name]

Re: Motorola V8

I'm grateful for Stephend's link to the review of the V8 which highlights the differences between the V8 and V9. I was toying with the idea of getting a V9 purely for the card functionality, but the useful review shows that only the V8 has the improved and quicker operating system...

...I know I'm going to hate myself for doing it but I think I'm going to go ahead and buy the V8 anyway. A CD recorded in 128kbps is about 40MB so I guess I'll just have make do with less of them on the phone at any one time and swap them about. If Moto bring out a 2GB or expandable version, Mrs C will get an upgrade unexpectedly early.

everyone seems to like the v8, especially the new UI.
yes, the v9 has the latest of the old synergy platform and the v8 has the new LJ(linux/java) platform. as well as running linux, it also comes equipped with a 500Mhz processor. it shares the same platform as the moto Z6 and others. almost all moto phones will come with that opersting system now as the old synergy is dying. there is only the v6 maxx, the v9, and a few others which use it now.

Re: Motorola V8

Have just moved over to T-Mobile and received one of these today.

As it's my first new mobile for a while (can put away the steam generator) I can't compare it to something made this century but the build quality appears solid with clear call quality.

From what I can gather, Motorola seem to have a bit of bad press but I've managed to load up the contact database, changed a few settings, uploaded a new funky ring tone without either a glance at the manual or the desire to throw the thing at a brick wall.

One word of caution though.

Do not let a sultry vamp with freshly cut talons get near the thing, especially if she (or he in this modern age) thinks its cool to open the phone one handed. Silly bint caught the internal screen with her back claws and while she didn't pierce the screen completely, it's done enough damage to cause an optical defect just next to where the clock is displayed.

Re: Motorola V8

As predicted, couldn't resist and bought a SIM free version (more money than sense) of these yesterday together with the bluetooth HT820 headphones.

It's nearly (see below) everything I hoped for. Build quality is superb and the operating system is vastly quicker than the old Moto version. The menu's fine and setting everything up is pretty intuitive but, the old UI wasn't anywhere near as bad as some people claimed. A little myth and legend, methinks.

Still not convinced about the memory, though. I've loaded 7 CDs at 128kbps (The MP3 player with the Bluetooth phones is excellent) and with a few photos that's 90% of the 512MB memory gone. Guess 5 CDs at this bit rate is going to be the max if I'm going to leave any memory for anything else. A bit of a bummer really. I'll get by and swap my music collection on my PC when I need to, but it would have been so much better if it had been 2GB rather than this 512MB.

Incidentally, copying MP3 files is now dead easy and quick - you just drag and drop the files into the removable drive that registers on your PC then create a playlist on the MP3 player and add your songs...

Overall, I'm delighted with the phone.

Cheers!

Add/ I think Roogster's got a Z8...

Re: Motorola V8

hi All,

I have just bought this phone today, and I like it but there are some things I just can't make work:

1) I can't put any musci on it via sync as I don't have WMP 11, so I connected the phone to my laptop as memory device and I could transfer some songs and it works properly, but I can't add any artwork to the albums. Any idea how can I make this?

2) I tried to pair it with my Merc's cradle (hands free) via Bluetooth, but though it connects, the car asks me for 'turning on the phone'. Also, any typ will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Motorola V8

I've just got a V8, and it seems like a good phone - except - I'm trying to set up email on it and I've entered all the required information, but it doesn't seem to like my POP password.

It asks me to re-enter it but when I try, the save option is available until I type the 8th character, then the ‘save’ soft key is replaced by the ‘cancel’ soft key.

Anybody have an answer?

Cheers

Brian
