Back in the day when i took my CBT i was told about Type A(blue label) and B(green label) helmets, Type A although slightly more expensive are the ones to go with for there added protection and durability.

Is that for the helmet alone?
Or jacket and helmet?

£130 will get you a decent enough helmet.
Good makes like AGV/Shark/HJC.
You need to get yourself along to a bike shop and try them on though.
What's comfy for one head isn't comfy for another.
And you may differ in size between one make and another (different padding).

Just as important as a helmet is a good quality pair of gloves!

Definitely.
I like gloves with a long cuff.
Short cuff gloves will just reveal a gap between the glove and the jacket if you fall off.
Given that's where an artery is, not good.
I like a wrist tightening strap too, I've seen too many gloves without them come off in racing.

Will hopefully get myself to the bike shop to try a few helmets and gloves on and also look at some jackets this afternoon after work

You'll be surprised at the different fit you have depending on the brand of helmet. I love AGV for style but I have a Shoei-shaped head so that's what I ended up buying. Oh, and don't be afraid to try in as many lids as you can, time and again. It's important to get one that feels comfortable and fits you correctly.

Me too, no other brand is comfy on me.
Shoei every time.

as other members have said go to a shop and try things on.also look for bargains and last seasons colours as they will be a bit cheaper.

just make sure you get covered head to toe
as if you do come off normal cloths just get torn off and the road will shred your skin off like a cheese grater

the sunny weather is here dont be tempted to go out with shorts and t-shirt as i've been seeing since the sun has come out.better to sweat like a pig than talking to a doctor about skin grafts
