It is, I agree.
The diesel models are called Crdi (1.7/113bhp or 2.0/136bhp)
As you would imagine, the 1.7 seems to be the most popular by a mile.
I regularly drive a 1.7crdi Hyundai IX35, and it's a perfectly fine engine.

10k is the minimum usually - we are the same - wife has only done 9k miles in around 16 months on our sportage.

agreed - awful looking but without a shadow of a doubt the best, slickest, most customer friendly/focused service I have ever received.

Absolutely top drawer.

yeah - avoid the 1.6 petrol.

we have the 1.7 crdi "2" sportage - good car, perfect for the wife and kids/prams etc

We were offered as low as 6K p.a. on my wife's leased Fiesta.
We chose 10k to give ourselves leeway (no 8k bracket)
As it is, we could have got away with the 6K.
I can't honestly recall what the difference in monthly payments was though.
Given that it's only £210 a month (VAT included) for 10k, I'm guessing 6k wasn't going to save us a great deal.
Incidentally, the lease company we went with was recommended by Lings.
Their deals on the car had run out, they referred me to the company we're with.
Very painless, from initial contact to car collected in two weeks.

What sort of money do you need to be earning to be able to get finance on a new car like a Sportage? I honestly haven't got a clue to be honest, my experian credit rating is excellent so I don't think I should have any issues on that score. Just wondering how easy or difficult it is getting finance on a new car these days really?

I'm pretty sure car finance is one of the easiest forms of credit to get. They are definitely more lenient than a mobile phone contract for example.

Pretty damn lenient I think! I got a new car from VW last year on PCP. At the time I was 21, had just finished University the month before, was waiting for my new job to start so wasn't classed as in full time employment/earning next to nothing and only put a marginal deposit down. Went through no worries! Though my experian rating was also excellent and almost at its maximum, god knows how though, I had a bank cancel an overdraft on me a few years ago.

Perhaps a scary example. It my Renault laguna was 18k new, I got it 1yr old and it cost me 12k... Well worth it.

However, it's continued to depreciate like crazy and now only 4k almost four years on

Well I've ordered a brand new Sportage 1.7CRDi 2 , finance went through fine, gone for the Kia PCP option with 4.9% finance, pretty good deal to be honest. Only problem is delivery might take 3 months but hopefully 6-8 weeks.

Deposit £2800 (cash and part ex). Payments £320 odd a month for 36 months, not an issue at all cos just got a £100pm pay rise and we don't need to pay childcare costs from July so that's another £100pm in our pocket so effectively it's only costing us £120pm , that's how I look at it anyway GFV approx £7100 I think it was but I fully expect and hope it will be worth more than that in 3 years time especially considering my wife only does about 6000 miles a year so it will be low mileage.

Those figures seem very expensive to me.
Deposit and monthly repayments seem very high.
If you'd gone for lease instead, you'd have been approx £800 deposit and under £300 per month on a three year deal.

Hmmm, well it's too late now , anyway lingscars figures come out at £950 ish deposit and £314 pm, not a million miles off what we're paying anyway. Don't get me wrong I can see where you're coming from and perhaps in hindsight it's something we should have looked into a bit more. Oh well, as I said too late now

Anything over and above the GFV will come into play remember (Which you won't know for 3 years of course)

Yes exactly and I would think a low mileage FSH sportage would be worth £9k surely in 3 years time? I'll talk myself into why it's got it's advantages doing it the way we've done it don't worry

The way I'm looking at it, his deal is costing him £14320.00 over 3 years.
That's based on £2800 deposit + 36 months x £ 320.00.
Leasing it through Lings would have cost £11940.20 over 3 years.
So he needs to hope the dealer will offer him £2379.80 over and above the GFV to be comparable.

Yup, so the dealer needs to offer about £9479 for the car in 3 years time for the costs to be equal. I don't think there'll be much in it, though the lease could've been an easier option.

Andy don't let it spoil your enjoyment, I have a feeling the figures will be pretty much the same at the end of the agreement anyway. Enjoy your new motor

I am looking on this lingcars site again. Do you get a choice of colour when picking your car. I think this could be the road we go down for our Sportage as we don't want to be held down to one car maker so at end of lease with Ling we could move to another car were as with dealer we'd be stuck with Kia.

yeah - you can pick the colour and any additional spec you want before you sign up for the deal. Just make an enquiry and you can get a fixed quote with the spec/colour you want.

enjoy by all means - however, you should have a cooling off period in which you should be able to cancel the finance deal if you wish.

There's theoretically nothing to stop you either a) Selling the car privately , paying off the GFV and using any excess as a deposit for your next car or b) Taking the car to another dealer , agreeing a value for the car with them and letting them settle the GFV with any surplus going towards the new car. With a PCP the way I see it is it's all good if the car is worth more than the GFV at the end of the term and as I believe the GFV's are conservative (so as to leave equity in the vehicle to encourage repeat business) then hopefully things will be fine. The current part ex value for a 3 yr old Kia sportage 2l CRDi According to parkers is £10120 from an original price of £16500. If we get similar depreciation on our Sportage it should be worth £11000 at least I would hope after 3 yrs which is a good 3 or 4 grand more than the GFV. Perhaps I'm being optimistic but I can't see how our car will be worth less than the GFV especially bearing in mind the 7 year warranty Kia's come with

I'm starting to get quotes for a Kia Sportage 1.7crdi '1', just to see how much I'm going to need in a couple of months.
It looks like around £17k will get me a new one.
I'll be financing it myself.
Whether I actually go for a new one depends on availability at the time.
Not bothered about getting a low mileage used one, to secure quick delivery.
Hyundai Ix35 still a possibility.
Effectively the same car, just doesn't look quite as 'funky' (still looks good though)
Prices seem to run around £1000-£2000 less for the Ix35.

now you mention the Ix35 i've had my eye on it as well it seems just as good a car (if not slightly better rated) than the Sportage.

We have a 1.7crdi 'premium' on the fleet.
Pretty astounding amount of kit in it, including heated seats front and back.
It's quiet, goes well, handles well (for a car of its type) and seems to be very well built.
Real quality feel to the interior.
And the instrument lighting is cool, a nice blue.
No problems in 9 months on the fleet.

Edit, the Ix35 base model (style) comes with rear parking sensors as standard too.
The equivalent Sportage (1) doesn't.
I see rear sensors as pretty essential on a car like that.
So if we go for a Kia, I'll be retro-fitting rear sensors (kit is £149 from Kia + fitting)
