cheapest brand new car

i keep umming and arrring about changing the type r for something a bit quicker and newer like a 350z or a mazda 3mps etc.

but, part of me would like to get something that is stupidly cheap to run, does a million miles to the gallon, costs nothing a year in tax etc.

so what would the options be? i saw an advert in the paper yesterday for a brand new car for about £8k i think (can't remember make and model).

some tiny Daewoo thing? maybe VW lupo/polo etc? i am sure i saw a small chevy thing the other day for £7999.

with the cost of living going up and up, i question if i need a car that will do 0-60 in 6 seconds etc, or should i just get something that will give me lots of miles from £20 and cost next to nothing in insurance and upkeep.

The cheapest new car I'd bother with is the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo (same car, just minor differences)
You can get them new for £7k if you shop around.
I've driven one (the Aygo version), I think they're great fun.
Quicker than you'd expect due to light weight.
And I like the sound from the 3-cylinder engine.

Aygo is dearer to buy than the C1 or 107.
Obviously the badge.
Which is a bit silly, because the only difference is the badge/rear lights and some other stuff.
So check out 107/C1 deals too.
If I were buying a C1/107/Aygo, I might even just go for the one with the closest dealer.
It's the same car, why bother making things difficult.

Better than that, you can get one for £5,795:

Brand New Peugeot 107 Urban Lite - On The Road - £5,795 @ Drive The Deal - Expired - Hot UK Deals

Even better, a 3 year old one with 30k miles sells for nearly £5k, so you lose almost nothing in depreciation.

The C1/107/Aygo are all made in the same factory, in the Czech republic.
This is why it's silly to pay more for one over the other.
Unless you particularly like the trim/lights on that version.

They'll be a higher resale on the Toyota and the dealers are supposed to be very good.

You are right, I've priced these cars myself and found the Toyota dearer to buy, new and used.
But, in this instance, it really is just badge snobbery.

That deal is expired, but it's feasible you can get close to that right now if you shop around.
I found a dealer that has a new 107 for £5999 (updated 25 mins ago)

Outgoing fiat panda is a much better bet IMO. £6k should get you a new or pre-reg.

tailwhip2000 if you are driving an EP3 i would think long and hard about a small runabout mate.......Have you downgraded before ? I'm sure your gonna miss the power/handling especially when that VTEC kicks in

I bought an Aygo new with no
Options for 6.5k a few yrs ago (when they first came out) was impressed with the engine and room inside.

I averaged around 45-50mpg on my daily commute (80miles country roads) and it was a fun drive and only felt underpowered when overtaking (or attempting to)

I traded it for a fabia vrs after a year, i hadnt spent a penny on the car apart from petrol and got 5k trade in with 25k miles

A good little car but i did enjoy having the power of the vrs when i changed

I'd mhappily drive a C1/107/Aygo, but I wouldn't drive a Panda.
Too old woman/district nurse.
Just shows you how styling can make a big difference.

Even more savings to be made if you buy a little old and used though...a 5yr old hatch (something like a Fiat Punto/Yaris can be picked up for less than £2k and will happily do 50mpg...yes no warranty but realistically repair costs are never going to be major on a car like this.

Why pay £6k to £8k for a max mileage runabout when you don't need to....

Where are you getting your figures from?
Plenty of 5 year old Aygos going for a lot less than £4k.
Same with Puntos, you can pick up a 5 year old model for a lot less than £4k.

The problem with all these cheap cars is they have no power, they claim high mpg figures but if you drive it like you stole it around town you'll be lucky to see 30mpg+.

Fifth gear recently tested the Kia Rio which claims 88mpg, the most they got was mid 40's and Tiff managed to get low 20's.

If you thrash the paps off them over a country road, sure you'll get poor mpg.
But most people, when commuting, can only go as fast as the car in front.
So you're just driving gently, 'going with the flow'.
In that scenario, you should get decent mpg.

Autotrader - the cheapest were starting at just over £3k, but I excluded dodgy/CAT D/Astronomical miles

There's a nice 2007 Aygo with 58000 miles for £3695.00
That's with a garage, you'd look to get money off that, I'd be looking to get it for £3400 max.
Obviously £2k for a 5 year old one is pie-in-the-sky, but £4k is wide of the mark too.

Drive any car like that though and you'll get low MPG..drive it in normal day to day conditions and the MPG will be far higher.

and anyone driving a car 'like they stole it' in a 30mph limit around town with pedestrians/kids and other in town hazards should have there license extracted from them....

We've got a 10yr old fiat Punto 1.2 Sporting that we planned to offload when i bought my last new car but we've just kept it for running around in..... Only 90bhp but weighs next to nothing and has a 6 speed box so we always get at least 45mpg and usually just over 50mpg. Plenty quick enough for the commute and running round town.
