It was great, fast and frantic. Once above 5.5RPM with the accompanied noise you feel like your in the fastest thing on the road.

Bad points:
weak steering rack (prone to creeking)
bad on petrol (averaging 25mpg)
eats tyres (7k average for a front set)

Here's my two oldies

99 Golf Cabrio 2.0

and the new arrival (today!)
a 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.5TD - needed something that could comfortably take two bikes, this does the job and for 900quid you can't fall off!

re: The official AVFORUMS Car showroom (56k warning) PART 1

After an unremarkable (but excellently reliable) 1.25 MKIV Fiesta Chicane, I grabbed an ST170 straight after leaving uni.

Spent a lot of time throwing it around bends in the year I had it, as it wasn't the fastest in a straight line (but when the intake manifold opened completely at ~5krpm, it was mind blowing - similar characteristic in that respect to the Civic Type R).

I picked up the obligatory 3 points, got fed up of pouring petrol into a hole in the back of it and also moved home (80 mile daily commute), requiring a diesel isntead. Decided to calm down a little and picked up a used 2007 Focus MKII Titanium 1.8 TDCi with a hatful of silly extras.

7" Touch screen satnav with MP3, 18" upgrade alloys (225/40/18), uprated suspension, DEATC, Bluetooth, voice control, 6CD changer, full heated leather interior etc. No cruise control though - shame, as it has just about everything else.

I'm still 'only' just 24, so a few cars I can afford to run and buy are realistically out of my reach unless I am prepared to be raped for insurance premiums. I would like something like an A4 3.0 TDI, but I fear they are a bit common now sadly and I like to have something that's different in some way.

Alas, I'm intent on keeping this one for 3 more years to wait for the next-gen diesels. Though I will be a qualified accountant by next autumn (CIMA), so I will probably be able to afford something a bit punchier then.

Both of those Focus's are really nice, the St looked very clean, probably the best shape ever so far but the Mk2.5's in Zetec S trim is also very nice.

I totally agree with you there - thanks for the compliments!. My 170 was loved to death - a bit too much some would say. The paintwork was the best it could be without a machine polisher!

The 2.5 Zetec S is fantastic looking - just a shame that there wasn't a mildly warm hatch again (like the 170), and instead, they chucked in the same engines

I hope Ford pull their finger out and make a diesel hot hatch soon.

You're only 24, you shouldn't be aspiring to an Audi, let alone an A4!! And certainly not a diesel!!!

I used my words carefully on purpose Something like an Audi, but as we all know, they are a bit common and have grown a stigma.

I'll have myself a Caterham in a few years as a toy, but I like diesel for the way it delivers power and torque. Although the Focus is quite modest, it is really torquey for what it is, and I can see why a larger diesel engine is so much fun to drive

Still, the drawbacks are that most diesels still sound like they are missing a plough on the back

I was sort of saying it tongue firmly in cheek, they're great everyday cars if a little dull, well let's be honest Audis are dull as ditchwater, but they are comfy and don't upset people quite as much as BMWs, and they tend to have nice interiors if you do a lot of miles.

I got my diesel A4 when I was 24 and loved it, started me on the slippery slope of the car fetish. Think I went through 10 Audis in about 8 years, it wasn't till I got to the V8 S4 Avant in 2005 that I realised what I was looking for in a car Audi don't actually offer. So against my better Judgement I went over to BMW, only regret was not doing it sooner.

Don't get me wrong I still like Audis and my daily driver is a 3.2 Quattro A6 Avant, got all the toys and it makes doing silly miles each year a breeze, but come the weekend it is nice to jump into the BMW and go for a blat.

Edit: I have just had the 3.0tdi A6 for 4 days while mine was at Audi, compared with the 3.2 it was slower, noisy, extremely front end heavy (first thing and most anything about it) and to make matters worse it was only showing 3mpg better round town and 4mpg on a run.
Unless you buy a manual 2.0 tdi which is not highly tuned I just don't see the point of diesels anymore.

I went from a 535d sport touring to a 335i sport touring and both returned exactly the same MPG wise.

Yeah, it's okay - I knew what you were getting at :D

Interesting about your experiences with BMW ... I was afraid you were going to say that! Unfortunately for me, I've been brought up around drivers who've lived through the 'bad times' of BMW drivers and it's something that still sticks today (regardless of reality).

I guess it's best to try them all out etc and decide what you like.

However, until I have some serious money (all being well that will happen), I will keep dreaming. I could afford something "better" in some respects, but it'd be a waste of money for me.

I've got another 40 years of driving yet - plenty of time to have something absurdly good :D

I like this, i'm tempted to upgrade my 2007 Z4 for one next but the new Z4 keeps saying buy me. I dont plan on having any kids soon as im only 25 so 2 seats should be enough.

Love the Tuscan but I think I prefer the previous shape/model just in terms of the way it looks. Reliability is so poor on this that I could never bring myself to do it.

These any better?

I think TVRs look the best in that Green/purple "flick or pearlescent" Paint (the one that changes colour when you move). I loved the late Peter Wheeler's Tuscan that he raced in the TVR series.

I still think the interior of the TVR Cerbera is the best car interiors ever made.

Your Tuscan still looks good though
