Yes you will, go to the DVLA website and buy directly from them, plenty of them for £245 and this includes transfer fee.

I know that but how personalised are they? 2 letters, folled by 2 numbers followed by your initials isnt personalised IMO.

You're evidently thinking you can only buy new style plates.
Like, for example, SV02 BOB (which I agree isn't very personalised)
Not at all, you can still buy old style plates.
So you could get one letter, followed by two numbers (T40 BOB).
Or you could, if you're lucky, get one letter and one number (T5 BOB).
There are umpteen connotations of plates available from the DVLA.
I've always bought direct from them, never a broker.

All the good ones are always taken though and without being to creative with black tape and screw caps its hard to find good plates for £245.

Ive looked for a number plate but with a name like chris its near impossible to find a decent cheap plate.

This makes me laugh though, N007 DBO is £980, my plate is ND07 DBO. (Anagram BOND D07)

It depends on your name, of course.
I was able to buy the wife and I plates that were spot on for our needs.
She has one letter/two digits/three letters.
I have one letter/one digit/three letters.

Re: Best place to buy personalised number plate no more than £245

You could get the likes of K66 HRS for £245.00
Get 'showplates' to make you plates spaced K6 6HRS.
That's pretty damned close to 'CHRIS' for £245.00

IMO, based on experience, the illegal spacing is unlikely to cause grief, provided you keep legal size and font.

Well with a name like Chris, you're never going to have a great choice.
Not without paying big money, or just going for simple initials.

Re: Best place to buy personalised number plate no more than £245

Me and my wife got matching plates from the DLVA for £245, both my birthday (month/year) N77 followed by our initials SSC and LRC. I know a few people have used the first letter and numbers to form an inportant date followed by their initials. It might not look that "private" but it does when there are two cars in the driveway with the same style (and our cars werent available in 96' when 'n' reg cars came out. Mine looks more private because my middle and last initial are the same.

Eleven years ago, I got lucky and got one from the DVLA with my name on for £250.
A11 UMU

I never knew that have a strange name would save me money.
I have an 07 Mini Cooper.

Re: Best place to buy personalised number plate no more than £245

I got one for my R1 motorcycle followed by my intials.

R1 ***. That was considerably more (Double) than £245 on the DVLA website, at the time.

Neither DVLA or the dealers are silly, the more desirable the plate the more money they charge.

At the time that I chose A11 UMU, the A1 option was £1000.

I don't like car or bike specific plates, you run the risk of them looking a bit silly if you change them.
R1 ??? isn't too bad though.
It's when you see the likes of ??? GXR on a Yamaha that it looks daft.

I was looking at plates starting BU54 to put on my Busa, but decided against it in the end. I can think of much more entertaining ways of spending a few hundred quid.

Re: Best place to buy personalised number plate no more than £245

I had a boss once whose reg number was WLC 1 - which matched his initials. I asked him how he came to have this number and it turns out he was working in London at the time (1950s), long before DVLA, when reg no's (and driving licences) were issued by local councils.

He worked out that his initials were due to come out, so he went to the LCC Motor Taxation Office, who confirmed that WLC 1 would be issued shortly. He asked if he could have it, and they said as long as he was buying and registering a new car he could have it. So he did. Which was nice.

Didn't cost him a penny. Those were the days...

I don't get why people post this sort of comment in numberplate threads.
If people are discussing buying a private plate, safe to assume they've already considered what else to spend it on.

It's not a criticism of the OP or anyone else who has paid for a private plate. It's their money, and they can spend it however they see fit.

For me the numberplate was the icing on the cake or finishing touch. Don't regret buying it at all.

When I buy a new car do I have to get it registerd through the dealer first ie first registration then get the personalised number plate transferred to the car. ( I have only just purchased the number plate anyone know how long it takes from buying the plate to being able to get them made up.

Don't know if the car can't be registered with your own plate rather than initially another?

Possibly not, as if I resold my personal plate its likely the DVLA would reissue my original one (although not guaranteed).

When I put my plate on my bike it was quite painless, I travelled to Reading DVLA with my documentation & plate transfer paperwork, sat in a busy waiting room awaiting my turn then got my documents approved/amended and finally headed to Halfords for a new plate.

However, I think thats all changed and its postal only now so will be a lengthier process before you can get your new plate made up and put on car.

I believe the car has to be allocated an 'ordinary' numberplate first, then your plate gets transferred.
However, if you're buying a new car the dealer can usually sort all that out for you as part of one big process.
So that when you pick up the car it already has your private plates on it.
It can delay the collection of your new car though.
For example, I was able to collect my wife's new car within a week.
Had I wanted them to put the personal plates on for me, it would have meant waiting another 2-3 weeks at least.
So I always take the car on the 'ordinary' plate and sort it all out myself later.
Another bonus of doing this is that I can choose my own style of plates, rather than the ones the dealer will make for you.

We have just bought a new car and as a surprise I bought my wife a personalised plate. I took the letter that i received from DVLA which includes the paperwork needed to register the plate on the new car to the dealer and they sorted it out for me. No need to register the car with another plate first. Really a simple and easy process.

No need for you to register the car with a 'normal' plate first, but the dealer will have had to.
