The old 'distracted by a bird' excuse!

And 'I dropped my mobile phone by wasn't actually using it' line.

I'd just keep my mouth shut if I were him.

Re: Bugatti Veyron In a Lake

Anyone know at what speed the rear spoiler is activated, or can it be permanently up?

From memory the spoiler only comes up when you use the key to activate 'high speed' mode.

To create the optimum aerodynamics, the Bugatti engineers developed three configuration modes. In standard mode, used for speeds up to 220 km/h, the rear spoiler system is completely retracted. In handling mode, used at higher velocities, the vehicles nose is pulled down and the monumental rear spoiler deployed.
Quote:
And then there is the top speed mode for velocities beyond 375 km/h, which is activated before the engine is started.

the rear spoiler also acts as an air brake

i believe in most parts of the US it is legal to use a phone and drive, my bro in law tells me its legal to use a laptop whilst driving in CA and they have adverts for over steering wheel mounting kits for net books

Bugatti Veyron $1.25 mill

Re: Bugatti Veyron In a Lake

Look on the bright side.....the car is galvanised.....which is a good thing, considering this was said to be a salt lake.

Pity about the leather though....

As eric has said....for the sake of a $40 bluetooth kit even if he was too tight for the phone install in the car.

Re: Bugatti Veyron In a Lake

Saw this the other day.

I was surprised that there is no 'Tow Point' on the rear end of a Veyron. If there were then the owner must of knew where it was.

Also, I wonder why the fuel filler cap is open... ?

Apparently the driver kept the engine running whilst he jumped out of the car for around 15 minutes before it died. Due to the flooding, you would of thought.

I've raised this question elsewhere, but surely when submerged:

1) Air intakes would be blocked and take in water
2) Exhausts would be flooded and taking in water

Has anyone else wondered this too?

I find it very hard to believe, that's for sure.
In fact, I'm convinced it's wrong.
Exhausts aren't a problem, but the air intake is.
Which is why proper Land Rovers are fitted with air intake extensions, which look like periscopes.

Thank god I wasn't going mad.

But what about those times when you see folk get stranded in huge 'puddles' because they weren't going fast enough through the water and the exaust takes on water and the engine cuts out?

Either way, implausible!

As was said above...it's when the air intake inhales enough water to kill the engine.....and that's usually what it does...if you fill a cylinder with water, you can end up with a wrecked engine.

A running engine will force water away from the exhaust.
So in the example you've quoted, their engines will have stopped because water has been ingested through the air intake.
Common for air intakes to be placed low down now.
Either by design, so the engine breathes in the densest air possible, or because other components leave them no option.

Nicely put.....the majority of aftermarket cold air intakes are placed low down, and a good number of OEM intakes are also very low,and a few manufacturers have already had problems due to engines ingesting a large amount of water when driving through pools of water, with nasty results.

On the Veyron though the intakes are mounted above the engine, extending into the roofline, which may well explain how the driver of this was said to have kept the engine running until he ran out of ideas.
