car washing and avoiding scratching?

Hi

My dad has just bought a new car, and wants to avoid (as much as possible), scratching when washing it (the tiny circular type scratches). I've tracked down these two items as an alternative to the old bucket and sponge.

Grit Guard Plus
Chubby Microfibre Wash Sponge

Just wondered if anyone else uses these?.

thanks
joe

Sonus Ultimate Wool Wash Mitt | Sonus Wool Wash Mitt

I'd go for one of these personally , there are a lot of different ones. In tandem with the grit guard you mentioned.

Re: car washing and avoiding scratching?

As above use a mitt, i prefer the meguiars micro fiber one to a wollen one but its down to preference.

Also, wash using the 2 bucket method, where you have one bucket of warm water to rinse the mitt in everytime before it goes back in the shampoo bucket, making sure the least grit goes back on the car.

If the car is particularly dirty (and even if it isn't imo) then it is worth snow foaming the car beforehand to get the majority of the dirt off the car before washing.

Two bucket method for me as well, with a meguiars wash mitt.
Some good advice here:

You won't avoid putting scratches in the car no matter what you do, however you can minimise them. The 2 bucket method as others have said is the way to go. Haven't tried the mitt you list. I use ones from here. 2 Lambswool mitts for £12.50, much better quality than the megs equivalant which I found to be pants.

Re: car washing and avoiding scratching?

hahahaha, I just brought a whole load of stuff for my new car, and am about to discover DODO Juice wax!!

I got the micro fibre mitt, works really well, plus I got 2 buckets with grit guards by Sonus and other stuff. I also got a DOD Juice towel which actually works pretty good. I dry my car with a towel now hahahaha

When I told my mum about my PH neutral soap she thought I was on about shower gel haha.

Re: car washing and avoiding scratching?

Having used lambswool, I now prefer a microfibre mitt from here at £4 a pop - are suspiciously similar to the ones that cost almost twice as much elsewhere online ... !

That site also offers discounts to some owners clubs - I've had loads of products from there and they are equal to or better than the equivalent products at the 'big name' detailing suppliers in my opinion.

Microfibre towels are also a brilliant idea. Two towels from dry, is enough to dry my entire Focus.

Re: car washing and avoiding scratching?

Good sugestions here.

I use a lambswool mit with the two bucket method. If it drops on the floor it gets washed in the machine.

Which ones do you use mark?

Is it worth having a grit guard in BOTH buckets?. Also, looking at the price of the grit guards, thinking of buying them on their own, and sourcing seperate buckets. Anyone seen any cheap buckets that the grit guards fit into well?.

If they fit, B&Q buckets are 99p a pop. Bright orange though, but who cares about a colour? Pretty good quality as well.

Re: car washing and avoiding scratching?

Joe, I use the sheepskin ones with the thumb. I really can't stress the quality enough. They really are built to last.
With regards to grit guards, although I have one in my rinse bucket, I really don't think they are essential. Provided you rinse your mitt out regularly, you soap bucket should remain clean. The dirt in your rinse bucket should naturally fall to the bottom. Provided you plunge your mitt into the bottom of the bucket, you should be ok.

Thanks Mark. I actually ordered 2 of the original type (more of an eeny meeny miny mo thing ), and they just came today - quailty looks good. Going to get a m.fibre one for the wheels, and some microfibre towels for drying off, from the place silverfox recommended - which actually turns out to be about 2 mile away from me . I think we will still go for one grit guard at least, and probably with the bucket included (the way of making sure it fits well).
