Adding an aftermarket head unit to a 52 reg VW Polo E?

I want to add a cd/mp3/usb head unit to my 52 plate 1.2 VW Polo E. It only has 2 front speakers so I also want to add 2 rear speakers (the space for them is already present behind the door cards.

Just a couple of questions though.

Will the wires already be present for the rear speakers?

And will I require any sort of adapter for the Sony head unit im planning on installing?

Thanks!

The Polo 9n2 has DIN radio connectors so your Sony should be fine.

Be careful about the red and yellow wires. Power via battery live or switched live. You may be surprised that you need to swap them.

You will need a power supply to the bee-sting aerial amplifier. You can buy one for around £6 on the well known auction site, otherwise your radio will not find most stations.

Thanks for the info. I might just take it to a shop to get it installed. I tried removing the dash today (to try and get the head unit out) and it looks quiet fragile to remove and I really dont want to break anything!

And you said I need a power supply for the aerial, does that mean the standard head unit i've got at the moment has a built in power supply for the aerial?

You dont need to remove the dash, the h/u should have some holes to put keys in to remove it. Keys are available cheap on ebay or at car audio shops.

Then to fit in a 02 polo you will have to swap the yellow and red wires around, the sony should have some easy to use plug connectors on its look to do this, most sony stereo's do.

Fitting rear speakers was a PITA on the polo, it was only my mums car so in the end i didn't bother.

Thats what my cousin told me, but there dont appear to be any (its the Beta head unit) holes.

As for the rear speakers, why was it a PITA? Have VW not already installed the wires leading from the head unit to the rear speakers and just not installed any speakers? Or will I have to do the wiring too?

Thanks for your reply.

Sorry, confusing my stereos, you need the 'slit' style keys

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PC5-132-Volksw...#ht_1598wt_941

They go in at each side of the stereo, next to the buttons.

In my mums there was no wiring and it was more hassle than it was worth to get the door card off to fit the speaker. It was only a mess around i was having as i had some 13cm speakers hanging about going to waste so it wasnt worth the hassle.

Re: Adding an aftermarket head unit to a 52 reg VW Polo E?

The VW Beta radio sends a +12V feed up the aerial cable to the bee-sting amp. That is what you need to replace if you fit your Sony.

The Polo E was just that, an Economy model.

You don't say whether you have a 3-door or 5-door model.

Harder for the 3-door:

To fit rear speakers will involve you in removing the rear seats if it's a 3-door(easy, just two sliding catches at the backrest hinge ends and unclipping the wire supports for the squabs.)
Removing the rear cards (and breaking several mounting clips).
Fitting speakers
Running a couple of speaker wires in the sill channels under the edge of the carpet.

For the 5-door:

Unclip carpet to expose sill wiring channel.
Unclip "B" pillar lower trim
Unclip door card
Feed speaker wires into rear door grommet and then into speaker
Fit speaker in door
Reassemble

Some builds of the Polo E did have wiring to the rear doors but I'd need a VIN to tell you if yours has.

Thanks, that looks more like it. This is also my mums car, but its the only car I will be driving for atleast a year, so I think it might be worth the extra hassle and cost to add some decent rear speakers, even the stock front speakers sound impressive.

Lucky for me, I have the 5 door

That clears up the antenna problem, yet another cost I will have to cover to get an after market head unit.

I will PM you a VIN later and would appreciate it if you could tell me whether the wires are present or not.

Re: Adding an aftermarket head unit to a 52 reg VW Polo E?

I ended up going for this Pioneer instead: DEH-P5100UB • CAR AUDIO • CD PLAYER • PIONEER

Should be here friday, and I got a good friend who knows what hes doing to install it for me.

Not going to bother with rear speakers just yet, see how it sounds with the front 2 then decide in the future.
