Personalised number plate

Touch wood, I may be picking a new (used) motor up next Friday (just 5 days off). I'd like to put a personalised number plate on it. I have tried to get my head round the process (but failed!) - can anyone tell me if it is likely it could all be processed in that time?

Re: Personalised number plate

I dont think so - Ive done it a couple of times, and usually takes 2-3 weeks to get the authorisation letter through from DVLA to fit the new plate

Re: Personalised number plate

Thanks. Called regtransfers - unbelievably pushy, had to put the phone down in the end so hard was his sell. Seems it takes at least 4 weeks. Why such bureaucracy?

Re: Personalised number plate

What a great idea.

You'll get a unique plate, completely different to that on any other vehicle.

(Just like every other number plate).

What will they think of next to sell us?

Well it is a multi-million pound industry.
I bought my plate 11 years ago, and intend to keep it. Costs £80 every time i want to transfer it.

Not really got the hang of this then....?
A personalised plate stays with the person and gets transferred from car to car.
A normal plate stays with the car and gets transferred from owner to owner.
Completely different.

It's only £80 if you know the vehicle you're transferring it to, like you're trading your car in and using a dealer.
If you're taking the personal plate off a car to sell it privately, and don't know which car it'll be getting put onto yet, it's £110.00 to put it onto retention, then transfer it at a later date.

Very funny. The car I'm looking at isn't coming with a plate so I have to get a new one.

Re: Personalised number plate

Surely the car you are buying has to come with a plate. They can't sell you a car without one IIRC.

If the car had a personalised plate and they want to retain it,the dealer will have to register the car again and a plate of the appropriate year will be allocated to the car, unless you wish to purchase a private plate yourself.

I didnt know it had went up....used to be £105 for a one year retention(which includes the £80 DOT fee), then £25 if you want to extend it for a further year. There are 2 and 3 year retentions available from the start, but they obviously cost extra.
When you want to take it off retention and transfer back onto a vehicle, the standard £80 DOT fee is payable again.

Not necessarily if you're buying from a private individual.

Funny how people get really angry about this!

Did make me laugh though, one one of the websites it says "click here to view our best sellers"!

You're half right.
It is, as you say, £105.00 and not £110.00 (checked my cheque book, paid it approx 6 weeks ago)
But you do not pay another fee to get it off retention and onto a car.
That's included in the £105.00

So £105.00 to put it onto retention for a year.
Go find yourself a car.
Transfer it onto your new car for no further fee.

Yes, you are correct, i just checked on that.
I assumed they would want to eat their cake and still have it.

Re: Personalised number plate

Firstly - buy direct from the DVLA.
The price will be the best you can get and remember the price included everything.

Once you've bought your plate, you recieve a "Certificate of Entitlement" which firstly, and probably most importantly, enables you to get the physical plates made up.

Now you want to dot he change in a hurry?
Take this certificate along with your V5, and Tax Disk.
Go to your local DVLA office, take a ticket and wait to be called.
When you leave the office your plate will be transfered over and you can fit your new physical plates there and then.
Your V5 will be updated and you'll have a new Tax Disk under the new number.

That's exactly what i did. Looks great. Many shops will put them on for you.

How is the original plate fixed on?

Screws or no screws?
If no screws, then you need to pull the original plate off and stick the new one on with new adhesive tabs, just ask...

It is not a good idea to stick your new one on top of the old one, doesnt look good and easy to get stolen

Nope! I assure you it has to come with a plate, even from a private individual.
If the person you are purchasing said car from already had a private reg on it he will be in the process of re applying for that reg to be put back in Retention or transferred to another car he has at present. In the meantime the car you are purchasing will be issued with the "exact" same reg plate it hade before a private reg was put on it....done it loads of times so there Na na na na na!

Correct. You haven't got the hang of this then.

A personalised plate relates to the vehicle it's currently on.
If not currently on a vehicle it is kept on a retention certificate.
Each change of vehicle means another payment to the DVLA, currently £80 a pop.
You are apparently thinking of the U.S. system, which is not the case here.

Semantics.
In practice, very similar systems.
My plate will stay with me for life, with me merely assigning it to different cars.
Vive la difference.

Re: Personalised number plate

Not similar at all.

In the US and some EU countries a person is allocated a registration plate.

In Sweden there is a directory, like a phone book, where you can read a vehicle number plate and then ring the keeper up if you want to comment about their driving.

In the UK the registration plates are allocated to vehicles.

A bog-standard reg plate on your current vehicle can be kept in exactly the same way as a so-called cherished plate. You simply as for it to be transferred to your next vehicle or put on retention, in each case paying DVLA the fee.

Of course it's similar, for pete's sake.
If you buy a personalised plate, you own it for as long as you like.
You then assign it to a vehicle of your choice.
Not the DVLA, you.
It only differs from the other systems you mention in terms of confidentiality, in that a UK resident cannot access the identity of the owner.

How does one do this then?
First I've heard of you being able to get people's personal details via their numberplate.

Yep, I can confirm this. When I bought my Harley brand new (the only thing I have ever bought new and only thing I probably ever will) I wanted my own plate on it.

They had to register it, have a regular plate assigned and then immediately swap the plate over to my private plate at the local DVLA office.

I have been reading what is being said about this...i wasnt going to say anything, but im afraid you are looking at this in the wrong way.
Of course you can buy a registration mark, sometimes paying 000's of pounds for the privilege, and as long as it is on a retention certificate, then you do indeed have the rights to use it. BUT....once you assign it to a vehicle, you lose all ownership rights, because it becomes part of the vehicle it is currently on at the time, just like any other plate.
Sure, you can pay to transfer it from vehicle to vehicle if you wish, but can never say you own it

Its a common misconception with "cherished plates", because ultimately it is the DVLA that owns all registration marks on UK registered vehicles.
I have a plate that i bought 11 years ago, have transferred it a few times, but even though it has my name on it and everybody that knows me associates it with me, i know that i do not actually own it.
Yes, i could sell it for a nice profit, so you might say how can you sell something that you dont own? That would be a very good question, but i suppose it proves how lucrative a business this is.

First I've heard of you being able to get people's personal details via their numberplate.
It is just a simple keeper check. Insurance companies can request it and do all the time, they will provide you with a full history of who has ever owned that reg/car if you need it!

The DVLA will give this information to anyone with a valid reason for having it. They tend to be quite strict on who they give this information to though, you will have a job obtaining these details personally.

If you buy a personalised plate, you own it for as long as you like.
You then assign it to a vehicle of your choice.
Not the DVLA, you.
It only differs from the other systems you mention in terms of confidentiality, in that a UK resident cannot access the identity of the owner.
Fed up arguing with you. Please read Ron240's post which explains matters succinctly.

As the OP will learn if he's caught twice with mis-spaced or altered letters, he'll never have owned the registration, which will be removed from him. Always remains the property of the DVLA.

The DVLA make millions from this each year. Parking companies pay to get the address of the RK.
Anyone showing the DVLA "just cause" is entitled to the information.

Amazing the lack of basic knowledge exposed in this thread.
