Insurance Renewal Up !!

Got my car insurance renewal today through the post from Privilege, Its gone up even though i have had no accidents etc lol.

Currently paying £115 p/m fully comp with at that time 2 years no claims, age 22 on a Seat Leon FR TDI (group 12)

Im now 23 with 3 years no claims same car and its £119 p/m, thought these renewal quotes were suppose to better your years previous insurance?

Anyway, i went onto their site and put in the same details and it came back at £100 p/m. I also went onto the likes of Confused, gocompare, moneysupermarket etc and all of them come back with different prices.

Gocompare cheapest was tesco @ £93 pm
Confused cheapest was swiftcover @ 87 pm
moneysupermarket cheapest was swiftcover @ 83 pm

some of them though had ludacris excesses £700+

Does anyone know of any insurance companys/brokers to try that you dont get on the likes of the above sites, im going to try Chris Knott and Greenlight as these are pretty good ive heard aswell as brentacre. Adrian Flux for me was very high £1600+ over the year.

Might be worth trying Direct Line cheapest for me by £100.

Re: Insurance Renewal Up !!

A Plan
Keith Michaels
Greenlight
Bell Direct
Adrian Flux
Liverpool Victoria

Apart from those you've done the usual with the search-bots, so add in DL and then contact your current insurer and be annoyed at how they can suddenly match your best quote.

Re: Insurance Renewal Up !!

Had you already been on max NCD, then i would have said your increase was perfectly normal, but because you should have accumulated an extra 10% NCD, then your company are obviously at it!
This is proved by the quote you obtained yourself being cheaper, although they will probably argue that they are giving you a new customer discount.
Talk to them, and they should reduce your premium simply by asking.

As long as nothing has changed at my end, i have never had a renewal invitation that i simply accepted and paid, because insurance companies routinely sneak in an increase and hope you just pay without questioning it. More and more people are getting wise to this now, and a discount rarely takes more than a quick phone call.

I see you noticed the thing you have to be very wary of with the cheaper than average quotes you get on the comparison websites - ridiculously high excess's. This is not confined to young drivers either, because i have experienced the same thing at 42.
I would never go for a slightly cheaper quote that had a high excess. I see it as false economy, because the only reason i buy Comprehensive insurance, is for the possibility of making a claim, so i definitely dont want to be in the position of having to pay out more than my total premium for the privilege.

Try Adrian Flux and Brentacre

I'm 19 with 1 years ncd, paying £1400 on a group 16 clio sport. Your prices seem a little high imo, although it could be your area/occupation etc.

Holy Moly!

Are you serious? That sounds very cheap, considering the circumstances!

If you dont mind sharing, what company is that with. You can PM me if you like but understand if you don't want to give that information out.

For the OP, definitely shop around. I think sometimes the insurers hope that people wont shop around and just take the deal. I was with More Than once and the renewal went up £200 from the year before with no claims or convictions. Got some cheaper quotes and More Than wouldn't even budge.

You have pm

Basically i have reduced risk due to good are/job/no commuting/limited mileage/use of company vehicle.

Also, i used to be with more than when i had a low group car but found them expensive when i changed from a group 2 to a group 6 at the start of the year, i also did a quote on the clio and it came out at over £3K

Re: Insurance Renewal Up !!

When you're ready to buy, don't forget to check if the insurer offers any cashback via www.Quidco.com as sometimes you can get circa £100 back.

When I did mine with More Than, I got £75 cashback.

I'm not trying to tell you how to run your insurance, but the counter-argument to that is this:

Firstly, obviously don’t go for an excess which is way beyond your means. But then, ask yourself how often you think you’ll be claiming above that excess. Few people make a major claim more than once in a driving lifetime. But if, say, you think you’ll be claiming every 15 years, then a higher excess is worth it if it saves 1/15th of the extra every year in lower premiums.

It doesn’t seem to me to bear any relation to the premium itself.

I do just the opposite to you: go for quite a high excess. On my insurance, it pays back in about 5 years.

I will personally never willingly choose to take an abnormally high excess, due to the fact that the potential to make a claim is completely random, doesnt matter how safe a driver you are.
If it works for you though, then thats all that matters, so go for it.

Re: Insurance Renewal Up !!

I agree with some of the above statements, i mean my partner passed her test few months back and had a ka 1.3 worth £650 so to insure it fully comp we was looking at £160+ a month aswell as stupid high excesses more then the cars value, so we insured her tpft and it costs £69 pm which is pretty good i thought. Few weeks later i checked online and could not find that price anywhere, seems insurance prices vary at different times of the year

Try sticking one of your parents on as a named driver, that often drops the premium a bit.

I disagree with the bit I bolded. Yes, there is always the chance your car will be vandalised, so you have no-one else's car to claim from, but you can reduce the chance of having to claim off your own insurance by learning to drive more safely, and more defensively.

Already have a winner, my 18 year old mate (no bonus/no points/no accidents/no experience/no idea tbqfh) who is paying over £2500 for a 1.2 corsa tpft.

That is just pure idiocy, he wouldn't take my advice and shop around by phoning up, insisted it would be cheaper just doing it online since he has a fear of talking to call centres

Yikes

When I was 23 last year with 3 points and 5 years NCB (unprotected), I was driving a Group 16 Focus ST170 (how it is group 16 is beyond me) and my premium was £520 a year fully comp driving a genuine 16k miles. Pretty stark contrast!

People forget that insurance companies are always looking to diversify their risk portfolios to generate their required returns on investment. If the portfolio looks a bit limp, they might look for more stable customers; if it is looking quite strong, they may opt for risky customers etc.

The actuaries will constantly be making tweaks and changes, which is why some companies can be insanely competitive one week and a joke the next. Usually, specialist arms of a parent company deal with different driver types (ie, young driver specialists are often part of a bigger company that probably has a subsidiary that deals with over 65s).

Not to mention the postcode lottery, income, status, age, points etc etc...
