Re: Does such a car exist?

budget?

Id forget manufacturers sat nav, there all stupidly expensive and crap, after market ones will be 100 times better and cheaper and most mainstream cars have proper panels to fit the odd shapes they often use.

golf GTI / GTD will do all the list taking into account the above

Re: Does such a car exist?

you might be surrpised by how well a suitable specified Mondeo estate would fit the bill....

2.2 175hp diesel or 2.5 220hp V6 petrol.

Re: Does such a car exist?

As far as I know, you'll only get a heated windscreen with a Ford (wonderful invention, by the way, the wife's Fiesta has one)
So some sort of Mondeo Estate?
The Ford S-max 2.5 turbo has 217bhp and does 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds.
Bags of room in one of them, and it will almost certainly have the spec you want.
If you don't fancy the petrol, it comes with a 175bhp diesel option too.

Correct. Nobody else does them - unless Ford give them permission (Jaguar, Range Rover Sport etc). I don't think the Volvo's even get them yet.

The Mondeo 2.5T also has the same spec as the S-Max in terms of 0-60 etc (of course, being the same engine!), so either is a good option. Bear in mind the MKII Focus managed to fit 5 people and 4 suitcases comfortably in July this year, with the parcel shelf on (my father was gobsmacked, and so was I), so the Mondeo should be more than adequate.

Down-side is that depreciation will be a little more than the equivalent VAG; though one could argue that the purchase price is lower to begin with ... swings and roundabouts!

Factory satnav is getting better. My 2007 Focus has it (I didn't spec the car) and the traffic updates are really decent and re-routing is good. Tom-Tom units that have TMC/RDS still cost a fair bit, or require the plug-in unit. Though given the choice with a new car, I'd never pay for the factory unit at £2000 (yes, that's the Ford cost, as it replaces most of the dashboard and controls!).

That's an excellent point which people often miss.
Official depreciation figures are always based on full RRP.
But no-one pays RRP for the likes of a Ford.
In real-terms, their depreciation figures are often as good as anyone elses.
As you say, you may get less for it come resale, but you paid less in the first place.
So your real-life depreciation figure might be something like 50%
Which is right up there with Audi/BMW.

I can assure you that most certainly is not the case in cold areas.
I've had Audis, Saabs and BMW's fitted with climate control.
On a winter morning in the NE of Scotland, they all take far longer to clear the windscreen than the heated windscreen on my wife's Fiesta.
She can drive off in no-time with a totally clear screen.
Not sitting there watching a slowly growing clear patch.

Re: Does such a car exist?

The quick clear screens are the shizzle. I've got one on my focus and it's such a time saver. No waiting for the engine to get warm so that the climate control is hot enough. No getting cold hands scraping ice off either.

In -5 temperatures (I had those in Cheshire last year ) It was certainly a lot faster than a cold engine warming up and dispensing air.

I think it is underrated for what it can be useful for as well - particularly summer rain, when you are warm and get in the car - heating the screen is far nicer than heating the car up imo.

Re: Does such a car exist?

Speaking of heated front screens....i agree it is an excellent thing to have, and its not until you dont have it, that you really miss it.
I first had this on my only brand new car to date, an Orion 1.6 GLSi way back in 1989. What a pile of junk that turned out to be. Have had it on a few Fords since then, but in practice, its not always as quick to work as they would have you believe.

I am amazed that other manufacturers dont use heated front screens, doubly so for Volvo considering Ford own them.
What is the deal with this...do Ford own a patent on it, because thats the only way i can see to explain it.

My father in-law told me they do when he was moaning last year whilst scrapping the ice of his car and I was stood watching him whilst mine cleared itself

I believe they own the patent on the tiny wires required, yes.
IIRC, they don't actually ban other manufacturers from using the technology, but charge something like £200 per car if they do.
So other manufacturers, presumably, just sulk and decide their customers will have to do without it.

The newer ones are much better - the wires are split into two halves of the screen, so they have independent wiring, in that if the fuse goes on one side of the screen, the other side is still okay.

My dad's 1999 1.8 petrol Focus screen takes a while longer than mine to 'quick clear'.

Ford do own a patent on the system, but I was under the distinct impression that it has actually expired now. There must be another patent that is protecting it somehow (I think Ford purchased the technology from Autoglass).

Other manufacturers have tried their own versions, but none have really stuck. Ford do out-license it occasionally as you say (I think a few Mercedes' had it), but only to certain classes of cars - Ford would never allow an Astra to have one for example. Some people complain that the wires are distracting, but I've not had any issues.

Re: Does such a car exist?

It's a truly wonderful option.
So damned annoying that my wife's £13k Fiesta has it as standard equipment, yet I can't even order it as an option on my £30k BMW....
I'm actually considering an S-Max next.
Not just because of that option, that would be daft.
But I really do need a more family-biased car and that option makes me err towards the S-Max more than others of the same ilk.

Well, now that Ford have aircon as standard across the Focus range (the entry level MKII Focus has it now edit: no, the studio doesn't, but the one up does), as well as mirror mounted indicators (don't hold me to that one, but I'm almost certain this is the case edit: it does indeed!) I wouldn't be surprised to see it (quick clear) become a standard feature going forward.

I was silly enough to get drawn into a 'forum argument' about the heated screens once upon a time, after saying that Ford used the quick clear as a deal-maker for many buyers. Of course, the premium car owners on said forum scoffed at the idea, but just look at the praise that's heaped upon it - I certainly would feel aggrivated if I didn't have it on future vehicles, and it seems a lot of others feel the same way.

We digress!

That's my Forde Mondeo. Check it out in Casino Royale. 5 star reviews wherever you look. And the year-on-year improvements and higher standard spec since its launch in 2007 has sorted out its foibles.

Plus, it's a brillian drive. I would recommend gettign one with IVDC - although you may see adjustable suspension as a gimmick, the suspension gear is actually a better rig than the standard (which is bloody marvellous anyway).

Another advantage is that the sat nav is done by Bosh/Blaupunkt, who send you out at least 1 map upgrade DVD during ownership. Other companies make you pay.

Said the Golf driver....
I know where I live one must see 10 Golfs for every new Mondeo.
SMMT sales figures say the Golf is the 5th best-selling car in Britain.
The Mondeo doesn't make the top 10.
Makes your implication that Mondeos are common all the more bizarre...

Ah well, I'll have to let you off there.
I class my Alpina as different from a normal 3-series.
But we both have to face the fact the average-Joe just sees a Golf/3-series.
So we think our cars are rare, no-one else does...
