Ford Sony USB port retrofit

I just purchased a new S-max Titanium with standard Sony DAB stereo (single CD). I had asked the Ford salesman what I needed for IPOD connection and was told that it was already in the glovebox, and even asked what the USB Port £40 optional extra was, and was told that I did not need it as it was for memory sticks only. I have received the car now,and do have basic sound connection via the 3.5mm jack, but no control through the headunit. Ford say that they cannot fit a USB Port after purchase.

Does anyone know what I need to fit a USB Port that will give me the additional IPOD control.

Note - I have the IPOD Touch, which does have a bluetooth chip, and can be recognised by the Sony stereo, but see that it does not recognise streaming music from IPODs. As an alternative, is there any way to get the system to recognise music streaming from IPOD Touch.

Re: Ford Sony USB port retrofit

both the ipod and the stereo would need to support a2dp bluetooth streming. AFAIK only the 2nd gen touch supports this - i dont know about the stereo.

as far as usb support goes, i dont think you would be able to control the ipod via the usb - it would need to be via an ipod data connection - the usb cable would only support memory sticks as describe by the rep - a way round this would maybe be to save mp3s on the touch using it as a mass storage device?

i would imagine there must be a usb port on the back of the stereo, so hopefully you could just use a usb extension cable?; however, this may be some sort of specialist ford to usb cable - maybe a look on ebay would confirm this!

Sure the USB ony comes with the Nav so you would need the whole lot that would cost a fair bit.

This ain't retrofit but solves your problem

Connects 2,Car Audio integration specialists

this seems to be the item you will need for USB support; however a quick search on ebay reveals it to be around £60

could you possibly connect the ipod via the 3.5mm jack and control it wirelessly via a bluetooth remote attached to the wheel or similar?

Re: Ford Sony USB port retrofit

i noticed same issue with a ford garage, was looking at getting a new mondeo and they said it had ipod connection, i said cool where and he pointed to the 3.5mm jack. i was going to tell him that that wasnt the case and it needed a usb port but wasnt worth me wasting my breath!

id imagine a usb port would give ipod connectivity meaning the track change buttons would work on stereo/steering wheel, but unfortunately you never have the option of retrofitting. i'd just try and get a decent aftermarket kit or try and return the car as it isnt as described.

oh another idea might be to look out for accident damaged/written off fords and see if you can rip out their usb port

Re: Ford Sony USB port retrofit

take a look over at the smaxownersclub.

You can retro fit a USB socket, that will give you control via the convers+ screen. but it will cost you!

you can do this on the newer sony Dab head units.
You need to change the bluetooth/voice control box, and get all the leads.
The socket can also be used to plug in a memory stick full of mp3's

Why? The USB in mine controls the my iPhone fine, is it because its a retrofit?
